Don't be fooled by the 2011 boxed coin

Postby Morsecode » Sun Jul 31, 2011 9:26 pm

They aren't all 2011. I had to cut open 100 rolls tonight so I could dump them tomorrow, and found maybe 150 coppers edge sorting, another 300 or so non 2011 zinc.

All of these rolls showed shields or 2011 obverses out of the box. It makes sense - the coin suppliers dump bags of new coin into their counters along with whatever else is already in the hopper. Many of the rolls were 100% 2011, some had one or two others, and a lot had 10 to 15 others. 3 wheats, couple Canada, etc.

Thanks for the heads up. One of the boxes I picked up yesterday appeared to have all 2011's in it when I looked through the holes in the top of the box. I was considering just dumping the box without sorting it. Maybe I should go through those rolls after all.

I wonder how many of the boxes of 2010's and 2011's that have been sold are like your boxes?

You can check them by the box on a good scale or by the roll. That will at least tell you if there are any coppers in there.. but not dirty zincs. I crack the rolls and reroll them before selling them as BU zincs.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more

I sure many have. I opened some rolls that I thought were all 2011 and have seen the same thing.

Thanks for the advice! Busted open what I thought was a full box of 2011-P's. Sure enough, a few of the rolls were overweight. Pulled about 20 cu's out of the box. There was probably about 50 older zincs in there as well.

I have $375 fv in a large milk crate in the back of my suv in 2011 shields. Its starting to eat up gas, I think I will finally take them and apply at a dump bank today for an account. I also have about $78 fv in shields at home. If anyone wants some nice red BU shields I can help, pm me.
