1 Box = 267 Wheats

Postby Know Common Cents » Sun Jul 24, 2011 2:54 pm

Wheats and anything collectible here in the middle of the Midwest have been pretty sparse. Discouraged, but not throwing in the towel, I picked up a box o' cents yesterday from the Chase Bank. You know, something to do while the outdoor temperature bubbles past 90 deg F.

Cracked open the first BWR and there were wheats! Lots of wheats. Those I found with their reverse showing I kept that way just to keep myself in suspense. The pile got higher and higher. Some looked quite old and circulated while others were nearly BU. The anticipation was killing me as more and more appeared in the rolls.

Nine were banged up or corroded beyond any value than their Cu content. Most others were pretty decent. The usual and expected heavy content of those in the 40s and 50s, but there were a few surprises. Those better ones and their approximate grade were:

1911 P EF
1911 D VG
1917 P VF
1919 P G-VF (12)
1919 S VG-F (3)
1920 P G-VF (10)
1923 P VF
1927 P XF
1930 P G-XF (13)
1932 D AU
1934 D VF-XF (4)
1938 D AU

The biggest surprises were the 32 D and 11-D. Nice coins.

This many wheats wasn't a naturally-occurring event. Obviously. Gives me hope, though.

Wow!! Congrats. If only I could be so lucky. Here in Georgia, 267 coppers in a box would be only slightly below average.

That's an awesome box!! It sure beats the 15, 9, and 9 for the three boxes I just went through.

Looks like some of Grandpa's wheat collection got taken to the bank when they were cleaning out the house. You know how that happens as my wife says those damn pennies you fool around with are worth anything. So I have many 5 gallon pails of wheats that are going straight to the bank if something happens to me. Oh well her loss.

from everything ive read, i guess i got lucky. went to the local key bank and asked for a box a few months ago "up to $100 there now" and the teller asks me if they need to be in a box? i was like? sure? didnt know what she meant and had no idea what cwr were. seen the sbbreviation on here but hadnt a clue. she brought them out $25 dollars worth and i noticed they werent what i usually was getting "think u call m string" paper not plastic from brinks. so i get home and start dumping them into plastic pitcher "which means i must have just got my ryedale" about 3 0r 5 rolls in and i see a couple wheats in the bucket! im like HOLD ON cuz i havent learned the wheat adj trick so i grab m when i c m. so i start diggin but theres actually a few... wait a few more, 10 more... fk it. dump the pitcher and search. guess i hadnt been payin attention. 1/3 wheat so far. ok more scrutiny. i check all the rest of the rolls. u should have heard me lol like a lil girl when i started to notice a VERY faint rubbed off cursive pencil word "wheats" !!! was so frickin excited i forgot to count, and wasnt sure how rare this was. well it was over 2/3 the other pile b4 i even sent through ryedale. so atleast 15 rolls solid wheats. been waitin 2 share this story.

That's just wrong on so many points. I'm averaging like less than 15 wheats per my last 10 boxes...all 10 boxes from Chase....and I'm in the midwest...wrong...wrong...wrong....all wrong!
