another newbie wants to know what to hoard

Postby littlecent » Thu Aug 04, 2011 1:29 pm

im a newbie 12 years old and would like to know what would be best for me to hoard, pennies or nickels or both. Ive been reading realcent for a couple of days i have learned alot. Me and my grandfather sort pennies and sometimes nickels. I am alot faster at sorting than him we hand sort.

Welcome to the forum. I would start with pennies since they are easy to get and are pretty cheap. Have you tried searching for silver in dimes, quarters, and half dollars? A lot of people have good luck finding silver when they start out. (Beginner's luck).

With 20 a week, Id say pennies...Start out with a $25 box, and you'll keep about $5 from every box (20%)...then just make up the difference and get another box...do that 4 times a week, and you'll be converting your 20$ to copper every week

I'd sort copper with your funds and forget about the nickels. Then I'd tell grandpa you won't give him a hard time for being slow in exchange for some operational funds to search a couple dime boxes for silver.

Welcome to the forum! I started sorting when I was around your age. The best thing to ask for, if you have the money, is half dollars. They are easy to sort and easy to cash back in at other banks. But if you can't find those, go with pennies. You'll be amazed how fast your copper hoard will stack up!

Best way to hoard, make grandad fund it and use one of his spare rooms to store it.... LOL!!
Really you're doing great just because you are active. I have 5 gallon buckets (pennies) that I seal mine in but, they most likely will get too heavy. I also package $25fv with my vaccum packer and stack them like they are small bank bags. I keep the Wheats and older off to the side.
Best to Hoard?..... Everything that you can afford.
Nickles, I just keep rolls. But I do look through bags for war nickels.
Dimes, hardest right now but, I currently hand sort all of those.
Qtrs, Not currently doing those.
Halves, the easiest to hand sort. Just scored about 10 last night in a $500fv bag...

I think you will adjust by the way you can dump. Seems that I am always getting backed up dumping...

pops is lucky, he has low cost labor...it would be better if you was old enough to drive. I might get me some foster kids to help me, those young eyes and hands sort faster.

Welcome to the forum. You may be able to pay for your college one day if you sort enough!

I'd say start with copper cents them turn to silver sorting as you grow tired of copper sorting.

Seriously, you are way ahead of other 12 year olds, you will do well in life if you continue to look for ways to get ahead. You grand father should be proud.

Tell Grandpa that you need a little working capital for your roll searches. Ask him for a $50 loan that you can use for roll purchases from the bank. You'll have enough money to pay for the coppers that you keep out of the $25 boxes, so there should be at least $50 available for him (in cents or currency) if there's a time of need for him. You know. Sort of a "slush fund" that'll give you a little more flexibility.

I started searching rolls with my Father and Brother quite awhile ago. Let's just say that it was when the 1959 Memorial cents weren't even thought of by anyone. Great fun.
