I do numis first, copper on the side, so stuff like this just makes me cringe. I can't imagine all the RPMs and DDOs ruined by doing this.

You're not supposed to clean coins. It dramatically devalues anything with nuministic value, such as any indians, etc. that might be in there.
Leave em be. The grime on them is part of their history and sometimes a valuable part of their lustre and tone.
