I've been sorting, sorting sorting.

Nope, I keep every copper coin separate.

When I fill a five gallon bucket, I then divide into 100 and 1000 coin lots. Once packaged, off to Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. Price dependent on copper price. Currently $3 per hundred and $30 per 1000. Takes about 4 months to fill, and a month to sell.

I still sort, but it’s almost certainly NOT going to make ANY TRULY SIGNIFICANT change in the welfare of my family, which sucks with the countless hours I’ve spent. Lousy investment, but good to have in case of emergency. There’s the rub.

Truthfully, it has not been a really great investment- NOT EVEN CLOSE.

And, no, I’m not selling. I’m not CLOSE to your price, so don’t ask.

After chatter of potentially turning pennies into nickels overnight (pretty easy to find chatter online) I wouldn’t touch anything under 5 cents PER COIN. You think you can get me to take less. Try me!

I speak my mind and love being able to do so here when I feel like it! Great thing about this site.

Obviously, keeping stores of food, supplies and copper (coins and wire) is good to do. In a separate thread, I will cover this a bit differently.

I've been sorting for 13 years. Results are not as good as they used to be, but I still have no reason to complain or quit.

Stopped years ago. Lost my dump banks and not using the dump at the grocery store. :D
Sold quite a few CTU here and then once I sold 1000lbs to a member here, that was basically the nail in the coffin.
Still have my ryedale and would get back into if nothing else for the wheats. (my favorite)
Good luck to all still hitting it, I'm jealous. :(

Slowed down. Bummed by not being able to sell off, having to dump copper. Spent a day at the ER ,then on my back the rest of this week.

I used to hand sort $100 a day. Now it is a month.

Technically I still look for coppers, but I only keep the clean ones from change. Don't see much change these days, and from that, very few clean coppers. My inhibition is that I just have too many things to do with my time, so it always falls belong the line. I still have my Rydale and coin counter, and coin bags, for a potential future day of further sorting again.

I stopped sorting boxes about 6-7 years ago, way too many skunks. All the billions of zincs have severely diluted the Cu's that are still floating around out there.

I'm still removing Cu from my and other people's change (only about 5-10% in my area). Also removing Cu from penny jars from a local diner I frequent, I replace them with zincs. The oxidized coppers are very easy to spot, I don't even have to look at the date. I found a 1944 in their penny jar last weekend. The last time I found a wheatie in the wild was about 2 years ago.

I stopped sorting about 5 or 6 years ago. Cashed in my pennies at my credit union. Used the proceeds to buy gold. It was fun but took up a lot of space and when you see the miniscule amount of gold compared with the boxes of copper, it actually felt good!

But keep stacking.

I still save all the ones I come across in the wild. A couple months back I dug out 50 bags of coppers that I had set aside because they were ryedale-sorted but had not been searched for Canadians or wheats. Took a lot of time but I got through them all. About a bag a day. I have about 500FV of "ugly coppers" that I don't know what to do with. Would be cool to melt them into bars if it were allowed. And now I have a decent pile of Canadian and pile of wheats that I'll probably sell off just to lighten the load here. Too many odds and ends that I don't really feel the need to have on hand.

I have also been spending more time searching for errors. I have been inspired by the 1983 copper found in our group recently. Finding an error like that would be worth all the time I ever spent on sorting.

Amazing!

I have stopped bank roll hunting and sorting completely (copper and silver hunting). I was trying to fill one more CTU, and have 4 boxes unopened from a bank from maybe 2022.

I also have a couple buckets of 'pretty' copper cents and wheaties that I'm also just too busy to look through. Not sure the end game with those to be honest.

If silver weren't so volatile, I would really like to buy lots of those sold on RC/BS and just look for fun keepers. Heck i'd even settle for coin shows near my place and look for deals.

I'm down to only pocket change "sorting." The cost, time, and effort associated with buying and dumping coin began to outweigh the enjoyment I was getting from it.

Maybe one day I'll pick it up again, but for now I'm just living the dream of getting excited finding it in my change (got a wheatie yesterday... woot!).

I received a 1929 wheatie this afternoon in change from the Dollar Tree!

Ooo, a 20's! Congratulations on the score! I don't think I've wrangled a pre-30s ever in pocket change.

My dream (*fingers-crossed*) is to get an Indian one day. Only ever found 8 in the wild roll searching, and never in change.

Haven't received 20's or 30's in my change since I was a kid. Now when I do get a wild wheatie they're 40's and 50's. I never got an Indian in my change, not even when I was young.

I’m recovering from foot surgery and looking for stuff to do.

I’m dying to get $50 in pennies from the bank to go through.

Good day!

A long time ago, we had this thread....faded away, but still interesting : viewtopic.php?f=7&t=19072&hilit=copper+mining.

We collectively recorded 80,000+lbs of copper in the form of copper cents.

That thread made me a little nostalgic and sad. Some really wonderful people in that thread in terms of what this Forum was all about. Not to mention getting a glimpse as the big players in this sector... +30 tons of copper a year is just insane. If i tried that my family and all banks in the east coast would have said goodbye to me real fast.

$100 a day by hand would take a LOT of time. Hopefully you could multi-task and do something else productive at the same time.

Hi all!

Still sorting, though its more of a project for me to get coins to look through. I love sorting a box or two of cents while listening to a podcast. Im getting kind of bored with my stack, though, so I plan to list some wheat cents in the very near future and get into something else
