Well:
A: That was in the late 80s when the copper in a penny was still below face value.
B: The numismatic market was illiquid, I'm not sure if it still is but there was nothing
other than silver the local coin shops would buy. I'm sure some people who inherited
coin collections just spent them because they couldn't find a buyer above face. Of
course even if the local market is still like that there is still selling online.
As for selling copper, I haven't tried selling copper pennies yet but if I do I suspect I'll
have to sell them here on this board. Also I'd have to make a trip to North Dakota to
ship them because I looked and Canada Post would charge about 10X what the USPS
would charge to deliver a 68 lb package. You guys have it really good with those medium
sized flat rate boxes.
