So, this is what you should do... put it back into the wild and lets see who the next real cent member to find it will be...

Kinda like the Where's George on the $1 Bill....

Yeah, and carve you initials into it first so that we know it was yours.

That is a beautiful pic of that coin. It must be even better in person.
Just curious. What is that coin graded and what (may I ask) is a 1909-S VDB like yours worth?

Heh, as much as I'd love to pay it forward I don't think I could live it down with this one!

Marine-I saw in another thread you only got $500 when you sold yours. Have prices jumped up in the last year or what? Seems like the coin, in any grade, sells for $650 at the lowest, and around $800 for an average grade such as mine.

The fact of selling non-certified RARE coins is that you lose a lot of the potential price because there is a distinct possibility the coin is fake. Making a 1909-VDB into an "S-VDB" is quite a simple task and will fool the naked eye.

Thusly the prices of low end RAW COIN RARITIES will fluctuate quite a lot. If you are patient getting a fair price is definitely possible, but it takes a long time to find a buyer willing to take the risk. For $500+ that reduces the number of "takers".

I had a guy come into the shop today and is looking for a 09-S VDB to fill a hole in his album. If you want to sell this then PM me, as he really liked the story that yours was found in circulation. The story behind the coin would make his purchase more memorable to him. He is not afraid to open his wallet.

Is the "L" missing on the Liberty on the obverse? Or is it just the picture? Congrats whatever the case!

The L is just faint in the picture, seems that it is not as raised from the coin's face though so it doesn't show up in the picture as well.

Made it down to show my local coin guy yesterday-he looked at it for about 10 minutes and said that it is real from everything he knows. He suggested a grade in the VF range.

I asked him if there was any safe way to remove the gunk from the surface of both sides. He suggested that it could be soaked in water for a little bit, and then dabbed with a q-tip to take off the gunk, as long as I didn't scrape over the coin. What do you guys think of this? I know many think that a coin should never be cleaned under any circumstance, so I am wondering the opinions as to do here.

Soak in acetone and it will soften them gunk and not hurt the coin. I had a 26-s that had residue on it and i soaked it in acetone. sent it to pcgs and it came back ms-64+ RB

I would suggest not using a Q-tip either... but I've never handled a thousand dollar coin.

Thanks guys, I will strike out to the home depot and look for some acetone. Will the acetone come in a special container, one that I can just place the coin into? How long should it sit in the acetone?

It will look like this http://www.homedepot.com/buy/paint/clea ... 54680.html. you will have to get something. Let it sit for a while wash it off. If its still there dip again. Like i said though DONT LET IT EVAPORATE on the coin

Thanks for the link. Since acetone evaporates, do I need to find a clean jar to put some it in and then set the coin into that jar and close it up for a while?

Step 1: Search google for proper usage

Step 2: Try it on some common wheats.

Step 3: Perfect your system

Step 4: Try it on "good" coins such as this one. :)

Thanks guys. I'm still uneasy about messing with the coin, even in a relatively harmless fashion such as this.

If this was YOUR coin, and had just a little grime around the edges like this, would you clean it in acetone or leave it be?

I would leave it be and/or get good at the use of acetone and then make a decision at that point.

I would dip but I am confident acetone will not hurt it. I just dropped a ms-62 1854 gold dollar in some to get some grime off that was in between the letters.
