rulesforrebels wrote:If you've ever worked retail or owned a retail establishment you woudln't think it was clever you would think it's a jerk move to do. some appreciate the pennies, while others do notFirst off your asking them to trust you that all your rolls really have 50 pennies, plus they have to count all the rolls, their safe may not be big enough to hold all those pennies. true They now have to take a trip to the bank. most businesses making daily trips to the bank anyway Basically it sounds like your too timid to go dump your pennies at a bank yourself so your trying to pass it off on someone else. my guess is that you may have missed the intention of real cent and the participants here. We have a good group of folks here that mean no harm. Realcenter's are aggressive in their pursuit of copper and other metals. Every RC'er I've talked with does have a dump bank. I think HCBTT's intent was fun, new, exciting, creative ways to get rid of zincs.

You are a better guy by telling them upfront as personally I would just refuse to accept your pennies as opposed to your buddy who dumps them on them after. I would call the police on him if he didn't pay me in dollars. that is hard core dude

The banks will take your pennies, that's what they are for. true Retail stores are not meant to take that much change, someone has to count it, someoen has to run it to the bank, it takes up space, etc. There is no reason you can't return your own pennies to the bank, if your passing them off on others in large amounts your just too timid and scared to do it yourself. again, I don't think that HCBTT's intent for starting this thread was because he is too timid or scared to dump at his dump banks.

I use my halves to buy morening coffee and small things like that where its only like 4 or 5 coins but for the most part just dump at the bank. great! most retailers don't like taking halves

Also, I don't believe anyone is obligated to take pennies. I think you are right for the most part Definately not a private business and though I don't have any articles to point to I believe I remember reading some news stories about how government will no longer take more than $10 at a time in pennies. interesting, I haven't heard this before People get pissed off about tax bills, tickets, fines, etc and try to go pay in pennies. I believe I heard this doesn't work anymore

Dumb story...
Today went to the post office to mail a check to a seasoned RCer. I needed to buy one 44 cent stamp from the lady, handed her a half from my dump pile, and she thought it was a dollar coin. I had to correct her that it was only 50 cents. I can't believe people do not even look at the money they are given. Had I been dishonest, I'd have sent that envelope for free plus 6 cents. Ridiculous!!

I can't count how many times someone has mistaken my halves for dollars and had to be corrected - I sort halves and use the clads for small purchases all the time. Younger people are the worse, they often glance at them, give up and then ask me how much they're worth.

Trying to spend a couple of boxes of zincs for gas is certainly not for the timid. Of course if my money isn't good enough for em I can always take my business down the street. The original intent was just to have a fun story to share with my fellow real centers. I give my dump banks plenty of action.. but I am always on the lookout for more ways to spread my dumps. Some retailers actually appreciate me bringing by rolled coin, as it saves them trips to the bank. And if my dumps create extra work for retail establishments by them having to count money and go to the banks.. then I have done my part to help sustain the economy and create jobs for my neighbors.

I've never bought gas with zincs, but back in May I walked into a B of A at a strip mall while my wife was shopping and bought three rolls of half dollars to sort while waiting for her. Got skunked. But we stopped to gas up on the way home, and the station had a sign "4 cent a gallon discount for cash". Put those three rolls of JFKs to a good use after all.
