I have a buddy that does cleanup work at a self carwash. He gets tons of coins our of the vaccums. Of course he picks our all the "silver", but he gives me the pennies. Free pennies are great, but there is a downside......all the coins come submerged in wet gunk, causing the coins to corode. Some of the zinc are so bad that they have deteriorated and are crumbling apart. The coppers, on the other hand, hold up to their harsh environment.

I lived(worked) at FT stewart GA while in the army,LONG AGO mid eighties. this one guy I knew who had to scrape by to survive used to open all the vacuums at car washes(besides coins he found several rings) and for free pennies, every time you are at the drive through window at Mcwendys, look on the ground! NO ONE will pick up dropsies(except for us sick people)

I found out why the pennies were so discolored and can't be cleaned.....My friend was soaking the pennies in boric acid in an attempt to clean the corrosion off the pennies.
