Question about sorting 1982 pennies.

My questions is concerning seperating the copper from the zinc 1982 pennies.

I don't have a coin sorter but I do have over 4,000 1982 pennies that need to be sorted. I think that the best way to do this (without buying a sorter) is to get a scale. However, I am looking for recommendations on which sorter to buy and where to get it from.

Anybody have a favorite and is willing to share this information.

Appreciate it.

I tried the popsicle thing but mine does not work right. My husband even helped me make it and he is a great builder, it still doesn't work right..... so.... I too need to know of a good brand of scale to purchase.

There are a few cheap ones on feebay. I got mine there. $10 to $15 shipped. Or try amazon. I heard about HarborFreight having one in their stores real cheap.

My brand is digiweigh. I think. It's great for my jewelry finds and for yard sale finds! :D

Yeah, check amazon. They have some good prices and if you get over $25 worth of stuff or are a prime member, free shipping! I have a scale from AWS. I made sure to get one that does at least 200 grams as I like to weight my rolls out of the Brinks boxes. I like to save my 140+ gram rolls for last, always nice to end with a lot of coppers.

Got kids? Got siblings? Got spare time?... ping them!

Drop them on a hard surface, like a granite kitchen countertop. Teach someone else how/what to listen for. I taught my 5 year old nephew how to do it and he loves it. Keeps him busy for hours too... my sister loves it!

I just flip 'em. You know ... "call it, heads or tails." To hear the difference flip a known zinc and a known copper, its easy to tell the difference by the sound. Sometimes my 7-yr old helps out, she's an expert at it.

by far not definitive but I use....AWS BS100 pocket scale 100g x 0.01g for weighing single coin and jewelry...a ESCALES UT series 500g x 0.1g for weighing rolls and then an Open Country Sportmans Kitchen 150 lb scale for weighing boxes/bags.

I use a digital gram scale from Harbor Freight. It works well and is quite inexpensive.

Borrow someones Ryedale. I would let you bring them over and do it. Even give you a soda while you wait!

A Ryedale is by far the best, but not worth buying unless you are going to sort large amounts on a regular basis. Just get a little digital scale. You will be surprised at how much you use it.

It finally happened.....after 2 years.....I had to change the batteries in my scale.

It's seen 1000's of 1982's and a bit of gold and silver jewelry!

Well worth the money!

you can pick up a coin comparator for like $15 from vening supply companies or even ebay sometimes. then all you need to do is screw it onto a 2x4 and hook up an old cell phone charger as a power source
