Ten new ones in a bag. Beats candy. And less to dump back to the bank!

At least you are getting solid rolls. My banks have been giving me boxes of dirty rolls. Every roll has a few non-shields in it.. mostly zinc. I have to take out the ugly ones and reroll the zincs with one of the machines.

How many bags did you hand out? Cool idea.

A cousin in NW PA said they had several hundred kids come by and that was with rain/sleet mix going on.

Awesome! Hopefully you sparked the interest of at least one of the children to become future coin collectors.

Enjoy your coin searches, everyone. :geek:

We had more kids trick-or-treating then we expected, I contemplated giving out JFK half dollars if we ran out of candy.
Shield cents never even crossed my mind but I think most kids would just throw them on the ground with the rest of the pennies they get.

That's a good idea. Might try doing that next year.

During a nephew’s birthday, instead of the usual junk I opted for a coin gift. Picked up a few coins that were 100 years older than him. While he opened up the usual kid presents, he marveled at the coins for a minute or two. Instead of ripping open more presents. He took the coins to his father and said, don’t lose these, I want to check them out later.

Maybe it sparked an interest. The natural order is that his attention will turn to cars and girls as he becomes a teenager. But as with any fire, it can still blaze high with a little stoking and some new logs later.

I am fifty years old and I bought a 1909-S VBD with my paper boy money at 12 years old. At 17 I used it to buy a car. Now I do not have the car or the 1909-S vdb. Both of my boys know the story. So the hunt is on roll by roll for the 1909-S VDB. I and my two sons.

My father was born in 1909 and unfortunately his family couldn't afford to ever give him his birth year coins. IT would have been great if they could have and if he would have been able to hold on to them.

Hopefully many will learn a valuable lesson from your story.
