I was browsing ebay and I saw several listing of boxes of bank sealed pennies on eBay.

Why would anyone in their right mind buy these for more than face value?

Good question! All I do to acquire mine at face value is take a trip to my credit union....they will order more for me if I so request it!

Could you post a link. The times that I saw boxes on ebay is because the seller was selling something out of the ordinary. Could this be the case here?

I've seen these too, not just solid 2011 or 2012, ordinary unsearched boxes. I did not check the completed auctions to see if any actually sold. My guess would be maybe people living in remote areas with out access to banks. Maybe elderly or disabled people who like the convenience of delivery. Maybe people without transportation?

I actually sold one on there before. You just have to price it high enough to cover all the eBay fees.

I have often wondered that myself. I had a run of five boxes of 2011-D's recently. I know those are not in demand any longer so I busted open all of the rolls. I found a small number of circulated coins mixed in. Out of the five boxes, I found a total of four coppers and maybe 15 to 20 circulated zincs. Now I know these boxes aren't always 100% pure.

some roll searchers like to get boxes of coins from across the country. if you live on the west coast you will find mostly Denver mint coins, and on the East coast you find mostly Philly coins. If you live in the west and want to look for Wide AM variety cents you need boxes from the east coast etc...that is all I can think of, I get all of mine from the bank at face value. 8-)

One of the boxes has holes punched in the top of it... not sure, but it's either Garda or Loomis. With a couple of tilts, it's easy to see the tops of the rolls. If they all look new, it's a pretty good bet that they are the same year and mint mark. I have a 2012P box I recently acquired. I'd really rather have the copper, but I'm going to keep those 2012P's in the box.

Why the hell have I been sorting all this time???!!!

I guess there must be people out there that just don't realize you can go to the bank and get one for face value. It's a shame people try to rip others off with these deals.

Yeah really, why sort? Looking at his other listings, looks like that may have been a fluke. Others are not pricing that high. Give a person their due for making a listing. Nobody is forcing the other party to overpay.

Crazy but it's true, people or someone is paying $45-55 box shipped, only saw one that went for $30 shipped.

I wonder if this is a shrewd way of unloading zincs?

Know a few guys here have coin rolling machines.....throw in some copper cents to the mix to at least show that the box did have some coppers.....seal them in a box with a glue gun.....small profit.

I got a box of 2012 today. Last year I think it was May before I even saw the 2011's.

I may hang onto this one for a bit. At least until it looks like there'll be a 2013 cent.
