Now I know why my arm aches today. I lugged a $50.20 bag from the parking lot to my dump bank inside the mall.

thanks for the info, per parkpennies.com, 181 per pound or 27.62 pounds for $50.

Is 28 pounds closer to real world due to the diminished weight of circulated zincs?

By slip by do you mean will they allow it, or do you mean will they search you. I have brought boxes and bags of coins on airplanes many times. I can tell you, you will be searched. If it is a carry on, they see it and search your luggage. I would recommend if you want to avoid a search, take it out of the suitcase and put it in the bin with your shoes, etc. You will get plenty of weird looks, but no bag search. Expect a possible explosives test also. If it is in your checked bag, it will be searched. I have never been able to 'slip' a large amount of coin by the TSA.

Thinking of taking a few bags of Zinc with me on an upcoming business trip and dump them there so that they don't haunt me where I live and "poison the well." Airline's Frequent Flyer program allows me to bring aboard 2 bags/nearly 100 lbs of stuff free of charge, so.....

Ugh. The last thing I would want to do at the airport would be dragging around heavy suitcases full of dumps. As long as you're not flying to Texas, I say go for it!

1/2 lb loss for 5000 circ coins?

I compute 2.5g * 5000 (plus a little for the bag) / 454 == 27.533lb (plus bag weight)

I would think 27.1 lb would be pretty short on count, unless there were a lot of metal detector find pennies which were 20% dissolved. I have been weighing circ zincs (I have a counter on the way, but not here yet), and am only a couple pennies off, computing 5000g being $20.00 (my scale maxes at 6kg). At 5kg, I find I am 2 to 6 over (so it is $20.02 to $20.06). So, taking the worst of that, would be about 15 cents long, for a 12500g batch. 15c weighs no where near .4 lb, and that does not take into account the weight of that somewhat heavy plastic handled bag.

HCBTT, I know you have processed TONS of coppers and have lots of experience doing it. I just wonder how accurate your scale is, in this case. I normally do not count my zincs, I just put them into some containers and take them to one of a handful of local banks with customer count machines, and dump them in.

Jim.

I could be misremembering the weight on the bag of zincs. It has been a while since I did a zinc bag. It could be 28.1 pounds. I remember that the rolled box of zinc weighs 14.1 pounds with box and paper (the normal way I send zinc back) I will have to do up a couple of bags and weigh them. The scale is very accurate.. to within 2 hundredths of a pound. It is one of those counting scales used by folks that process a lot of coins. You can put a pile of any other denomination on it and it will give you the weight and exact number of coins and face value of the pile. :mrgreen:
