Dirty Coins?

I went through a box of pennies last night, hand sorting them and finding that some of them were a bit filthy. I know circulated coins are sometimes that way, but this box was kind of nasty! :|

A box of filthy cents with a decent copper percentage is still better than the boxes of shiny new 2011-D cents that I keep getting.

Maybe I will start wearing Latex gloves when I deal with pennies....nah. Every penny has a story, where it's been (do we REALLY want to know?) How many times it has been spent, etc. So far haven't found any curly hairs during my searches! :)

I want to start a coin tracking site like the "Where's George" that tracks dollar bills.
Any interest?

i had one roll last night that was marked "SAVE"... it was all copper and had 15-20 cents that were at least XF and a few that a case could be made for BU. Granted, unless i find some with errors or small dates they won't be worth much more than melt for another 50 years or so, but still it was a fun roll.

Sometimes I get a large amount of CWR's that are all corroded and crusty with minerals, but no dirt.
I keep thinking that they came from a fountain at a local mall or wishing well.
Next time I hit them I'll ask about dimes and quarters too.

RE wheres george for coins? OK how about a VERY TINY stamp that anyone with a USB microscope could read. of course anything worth saving would be hoarded..

Nope, a tamper evident sticker with a unique number on the coin and the web address. :D
