IH Buying Opportunity

Postby motos » Sat Mar 24, 2012 1:52 pm

Hey guys,

Contacted this guy selling 210+ indian head pennies on craigslist. He was selling for 350 and I offered 300 and he's willing to do a deal.

If you go buy redbook values the coins are worth 500+. Does this sound like a good deal to anyone?

Thanks

It all really depends on the years and condition. If they are all common date and worn, not really a good deal IMO. If it is a nice mix some 1860-1880 in the mix and some in decent shape it may be a deal.

A lot of of late 1800's and 1900's but a fair amount of early years. Readable dates on a bunch

Redbook values trend just a tad optimistic. Especially in the lower grades.

Still...an ok deal.

This could be anything from a bad deal to the best deal ever listed on this site.

"Normal" Indian Heads are super in condition F2 or worse and are worth about 65 to 70 cents each.

However, 1 BU indian, and you are probably sitting pretty decently.

You should look at them and if they are all crud with green on them. Pass.

All the coins are in the cardboard flips with an 1864 1867 a few VF 1909. That and a few more make me keep rethinking it.

1909's are worth significantly more than normal. As are 1864's and 1867's. All of those in anything but giant hole condition are worth $1+ each. And, more as the condition improves.

It sounds worth the risk based on that.

Hi there-

My experiences with craigslist have all been either insanely awesome deals or complete rip -off wastes of time. JMO, chances are the guy selling the IHs has some idea of their worth if he knew to mention the 1909's and earlier dates, and if they're all in flips....hmmmm. Probably still a good price but I don't think it will be incredible...I could very likely be wrong though-

I tried buying a little silver off Craigslist today, and told the guy I'd buy his whole lot if the price was right.

His response was that his coins (most were Roosevelts) were special dates, and he wanted 36X face for the lot.

Redbook prices give you an ideal of what dealers are going to ask in retail prices. As somebody said earlyer, it can be a bit high on the lower grades.
