A nice score.

Hello everyone. I'm mostly a lurker here, but I visit frequently, and enjoy reading what everyone has to say. I hand sort between $25-$75 a week, and have been doing so very consistently for the last 6 months. I get just under 30% copper on average, and about 10 wheaties a week. This Friday I stopped by a normal pick up bank, and instead of the usual disgusted look that I get from the head teller, I was greeted with a smile. She said that a local school had a "penny drive" and that some lady had brought in about 10 boxes of rolled pennies. I happily bought the $37 that she had in her tray at the moment and took them home for sorting. I got them to my sorting desk, grabbed a roll and noticed something unusual. The roll in my hand looked very old. It was a shotgun roll, and the end with the obverse showing had a bright red, shiny 1960-P looking at me. The other end was tails, but it was also shiny and red. I quickly dug through the rolls, and found there to be 10 of these rolls, all apparently 1960-P, unopened OBW rolls. This was a nice surprise! Any thoughts from the more experienced members? I've listed one on eBay, but I wonder if I should just keep the rest for my kids and potential grand kids.

I have found similar rolls of solid date near BU pennies from early 60's. I generally ensure that the whole role is a solid year / quality and then just keep them seperate from the rest of the hoard. I got about a $25 box full now. I dont think they are worth anything really to speak of today. But like you said someday your kids / grand kids may appriate them. And if worse comes to worse they are always copper :)

Definitely hang onto them. If they're really OBW shotgun rolls, I'd buy one. :D

Leave the rest for the kids.

Exciting find! Like others said, they don't carry much of a premium now but are surely worth keeping separate. BU coins from that time could rise in price quickly once the penny is axed and more value appears.

or you could just ebay them as is with the potential to find such coins... "RARE solid date unsearched shotgun rolls! Could they contain any scarce small dates?"

Wow! Thank you for the comments and advice. I didn't know you could sell things here on realcent, but if you're interested in a roll, just let me know. I don't have an emotional attachment to them, so I'd be happy to sell them, if you want some. This is a great group of people!
