Scrap em now?

Postby iatetacos » Fri May 04, 2012 8:34 pm

If you could find a scrap yard taking pennies (even though it's illegal) would you off your stash now at current copper price or wait for it to higher and legal?

Nope, this fist isn't releasing anytime soon, I'm looking for a big payday down the road.

I would sell them in a second and buy silver the next second.

Just my two (copper) cents.

Keep it legal and wait for the melt ban to be lifted. With the Canadian cent now gone and metal changes for the US cent and nickel almost certain, the time for the melt ban to be lifted will be soon. My guess would be one year after the metal change.

I guess how i see it...is if you can get 2.5 pennies for every copper right now...do it and keep buying and sorting and stashing for when copper prices go even higher...its inevitable

I guess it really depends. I like copper for diversification. If you prefer silver, now is a good a time as any to sell. If you intend on holding copper into the future, you could sell, and then buy more pennies at face; potentially increasing your return. However, that does not include time it will take to replenish your supply. How much is your time worth?

If its close to spot, grab the money and run. As long as you don't know that they're being melted, you haven't done anything wrong.

I am a long term holder (hoarder) of copper pennies and silver, I dont sell and I don't buy pennies, well, I lie, I buy IH and wheaties when they are at a good price. My intent is to preserve wealth in to my golden years, if you need money, sell something else but not your copper, silver or gold.

I would have the wife sorting 8 hrs a day and I would be scrapping them the following day.
