It wouldn't surprise me if there were a good number of these waiting to be found. No one looked very hard back then...at least not in any way that caught on with collectors generally.

You guys with the ryedales have the upper hand on this one. I won't set aside '83s, but if one feels funny I'll ping test it.

Or sitting in a CTU that has been squirreled away, never to be found and then melted when the ban is lifted.

It's a very interesting question, from a statistics point of view. How many 1983 pennies have been hand sorted and weighed for out of spec, coupled with how many pennies have been sorted strictly on weight then checked for date, compared to how many pennies exist in the universe of pennies that are sorted. I don't know how to do the math but I would guess that if there are already two known out of billions of coins minted, there are prolly thousands of them out there left to find.

So now I gotta hand sort the copper after I get them off the machines? This is really gonna slow down production.

I have never checked the dates on my copper. I just look for Wheats and Canadians. Looks like these sorts are going to take a bit longer now that I need to look for 1983.

Yeah, I hand sort anyway and toss the 82's aside to check later with a comparitor. Maybe I'll start doing the same with 83's.

Thats an idea:

People who handsort send their Zincs/1983 cents to people with Ryedales. Ryedale folks send zinc thru their machines, inspect any coins that go thru the copper side.

Both sides fight over whats a fair share for each side.
