Painted??

Postby atticus » Tue May 29, 2012 7:31 pm

Hi All,

I'll try to get a scan done and figure out how to post pics soon. I bought a roll of 1982 pennies and one of them is all sputtered. Is it a common scan to spraypaint coins in order to pass them off as "BU"? Or is it possibly a plating defect? I know a pic is worth a thousand words, just wanted to throw that out and see if anyone's heard of this. I mean, why go through the bother of painting 82's (wasn't even a difficult version to find)?

Thanks

Atticus

what do you mean by "Sputtered" and are they copper or zinc?

it's zinc and the coating looks splattered on, in that there are little blobs of copper all over the front and back. i'm working on a scan and will have one up soon.

it's most likely bubbles under the copper coating but lets see the pics anyway :ugeek:
