So I know someone that's a head teller at a bank around here and I talked to her in church and she told me she had 3 bags of customer returned pennies. Naturally I offered to come get them all. Bag 1- 2 wheat and standard 15% copper. Bag 3- 70 wheat. 4 steel. 5 Canadians. 40% coppers. Awaiting results of bag 3 that went home with a friend to sort

Standard 15% for you? Ouch my man.

I'm a bit irked if I fall below 25% on a box here :)

15% ain't bad if you don't have to deal with wrappers. The Ryedale will run that in no time.

I also have had no luck in getting bags, all banks here just think I am trying to steal them or something awful when I ask, and can't say no quickly enough!

Heh. Recently my bank actually asked if I minded getting a bag instead of 2 boxes... I don't see why they wouldn't want to sell.

Most of my banks do not keep full bags around very long, a day or two at most. Because of this I have to go after the bags still attached to the machine.

It has been my experience that getting coin in bags is still difficult because it requires a teller, a smart teller to go to the machine, punch buttons and zero out the number and make sure the machine count is balanced to the running totals they have on hand. It is much easier to say "One box or two?" and reach under the counter and hand them over.

Some go as far as to say it is a violation of a Federal Policy or State Policy but what I think they mean is Bank Policy.

There is also the problem of the bank not really knowing what is in the bags as per count and coin types. Let's face it, the machine gets it wrong every once and a while and dimes drop in pennies and quarters sometimes in nickels (at least in my bags). They do not want to be held accountable for a mis-count by the machine.

Third, they think that Joe on the street does not know how much money it is really going to be and when they do all the work and say $497 for the bag of dimes, you will freak out and say, "Oh, I didn't know it was going to be that much!"

Sooooo...

I tell them up front about my sons quest for old coins and that we understand the count may not be right and we are willing to take all the coin they will give us (in pennies, dimes or some combination of mix coin).

Always be ready and have plenty of cash on hand and take it all. (If you ask for pennies make sure you have at least $50 in your pocket, $500 for dimes, $200 for nickels or $1000 for quarters or halves). And it doesn't hurt to take odd coins off there hands if they want to sell them. I have bought IKES and 2 Dollar bills to help tellers get rid of them. Some hate halves to so in the bag they go!

Once they know i mean business and can float the note, they get relaxed for the most part and we can do business. I have several banks now that will give me bags off the machine. The only problem is they only reach close to being full about once a month so you have to spread out the buy locations.

Good luck!!

what are the banks you guys get your bags from? As a side note, in st. louis banks come in clusters... you can go for miles and not a single bank and the 12 in a half mile.. I live by a cluster so I have M&I bank, Gateway cu, 5/3 bank, pnc bank, us bank, eagle bank, commerce bank, truman bank, bank of america, Regions bank.

I pick up bags from a few different banks. I have accts at all. Low balances though.

I found out my one banks that sells me bags gets all the change from local parking meters. Anyone think it's worth searching those? Dimes only, I wouldn't bother with quarters.
