I am no expert, but I did just look on eBay and I see others with less doubling than this being marketed as 72/72's. But it looks like a lot of the high dollar sales are ones with obvious doubling all over the place. Still a nice find in my book! Interested to hear what others have to say.

Can we see "IN GOD WE TRUST"? That's the true marker but there are a bunch of 1972 varieties....but it looks good so far!!!

it looks like machine doubling to me rather than an actual doubled die. i still keep them, but they are not worth more than its copper value, unless you scam someone on ebay.

willy13 has it right ... this is machine doubling or "die bounce". In the true DD, the doubled impressions are both raised.

Could someone help me understand that better? I'm not clear on the process or difference.
Thanks!

Here is some useful information: http://coins.about.com/od/coinsglossary ... ie_def.htm

The true DD coin is produced from a damaged die, whereas machine doubling on a coin is caused by a mechanical hiccup in the striking process using a perfectly good die.

Interesting, I'm clearer on the process thanks!

I need to look at some true DDs, I don't 'see' the difference yet. ;)

it is possible there is true doubling from a double die on the rest of the coin, but the "1972" is indeed an example of machine doubling.

I can't see the bottom end of the "2". I'm looking for a notch in the corner. Notch is DD no notch MD.

the give away that this is machine doubling is the shelf like look of the doubled areas of "1972".

there is absolutely nothing doubled on liberty, or in god we trust. I am new to taking pictures this close up, but I will try to get the whole thing in. so. if its machine doubling, is it worth a buck or two? THANK YOU for all the help!!

machine doubling does not add value to the coin, but I save them any way, especially the extreme ones like yours.

There are some collectors out there that like 'em. Just not alot of $$$ for them. I have sold a few, myself. As machine doubling, of course.

Shoot, I like it. Let me know if you want to get rid of it!
