What's the oldest coin you've found?

Postby scyther » Tue Jul 31, 2012 6:31 pm

What's the oldest coin that you've found in circulation? For a while mine was a 1917. Then I found a 1913. That was like 2 months ago, and I still haven't found anything older.

I only sort pennies so far, but you can list whatever kind of coins you want.
267,500 pennies and 186,000 nickels searched. Hand sorter.

Found a Draped Bust Large Cent in a bag of half dollars a few years back. It's pretty worn, but if I hold it just right it looks to be dated 1801.

It was indeed an incredible find. I did not sleep for two nights following that discovery. :!:

I can't get bags where I am.. so everything is in rolls. Oldest I have found in circulation was an 1859 Indian.

1819 Spanish Real. Silver in a penny roll. And it was in better shape than ones I saw on ebay. I was pretty happy.

Just last week, I found an 1881 three-cent nickel (but the size of a dime) called a "trime" in the reject chute of the TD Bank coin machine. Looks like someone didn't check their pocket change closely enough!

Last night I found a 1911. Sadly it's quite dirty and corroded, but the date's intact.
