What is the chance.....WOW!

Postby TheJonasCollegeFund » Sat Aug 04, 2012 11:48 pm

I got a call from my penny pick-up bank. They told me they had MORE this week. I had already got 10 bags on Monday. They ended up with 6 more by today, Saturday!!!

Anyway, I'm talking to the branch manager about coins and pennies....you know the blah...blah...blah....and he tells me he wants the next 1909 S VDB I find! I'm like keep dreaming bud. Well this guy got me thinking about doing just that....finding a "S VDB"!

To make a long story short and to the point, I was loading up the Ryedale and I see a wheat in the tupperwave container I use to sort out stuff the Ryedale doesn't like. This sucker holds 4 $50 bags at a time. Anyway, I look for the date but I see this coin has seen some time in the ground. It has some pitting and what looks like rust stuck to the front. I put it away for later. I had a hunch about it!!!!

I took the wheat inside to my table sorting area. I got my super dooper light going and my loupe in hand. Now what I see has me thinking....OMG!

I can make out VDB on the reverse but it's a bit rough in that area. But on the front I can clearly see 19?9 and then under that I swear I see an "S". And I know the 1919's didn't have the VDB on the reverse. I can't make everything look just right, yet. I had to get some sleep for work and didn't get any pics yet. And I don't care about the condition of the coin. I might have found me a 1909 S VDB!!!!!!!

By the way, I did not.....let me repeat....I did not win the powerball tonight!

I need a quick lesson in cleaning this little wheatie of mine!!!!!

Wish me luck!!!!!

In the morning when I get in from work. Maybe my nice camera will prove me wrong. I say I got a 20% chance of being right! :D

Cool. Do not clean it. If it is the real deal, it is certainly not the coin you want to hone your cleaning skills on.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more

There are stuff on top of what I hope is the VDB that I thin I see and then the same with the "S" and with the "0".

Since this is an environmently damage coin....what is cleaning gonna do to it to make it any worse.

I may find it's just a 1919 wheat with pitting that I see 4 real nice letters.....you know....like seeing Jesus on a piece of toast. I may have been looking too hard....ya' know!!!

I dug a 1893 indian head earlier this summer. I threw it in my tumbler with some sand for about an hour. It took away alot of the crap that was stuck to it. it took the green, too! But it looks 100% better now than then. Anyway, wish me luck!!!!!

I totally agree with HCBTT. DON'T CLEAN THIS COIN! It will forever destroy it's numismatic value.

After you become really skilled at lifting vertigris from coins of lesser value, give it a shot on this one.

I have never tried it, but I hear soaking them in grape seed oil really helps.

The bank manager said he wanted your next s-vdb. He didn't say it had to be pretty. ;)

Congrats my friend! No matter the condition, it is an amazing find if it is indeed the S-VDB! Welcome to the select club of those to find one :D

My sincere condolences for your loss.

Wrong. I would buy that if it's a 1909S or 1909SVDB or even a 1909VDB or even a 1909!
