1909 Copper Penny

Postby mrrosado » Tue Sep 11, 2012 12:18 pm

Well,
I know from reading these boards that these pennies are rare. I found one on eBay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160878004243
Again this seller has nothing to do with me nor my parish but I thought someone here might be interested in this.
I like collecting Gold and Silver. I prefer the Silver stuff. God Bless You.

The rare ones have an S mint mark. They made over 27 million 1909 VDB cents, but less than 500,000 1909 S VDB cents. Here's an excellent example of the 1909 S VDB which sold for over $12,000.

Yeppers the two 1909 pennies that are "Rare" are your 1909-S VDB and your 1909-S no VDB. A plain 1909 can usually be had for less than 10.00 in really nice condition.

Actually there aren't any rare 1909's. Both Indian heads, all the Lincolns, and even the "S over S" are all NOT RARE.

Check ebay right now and you can find at least 50 of each of these on there. Right now.

These coins are NOT RARE.

However: They are very desirable as nearly everyone that collects coins wants at least one and therefore the price is high due to that.

Or how about an 1872 Aluminum Indian Cent. Only 3 known. It can be yours for the low low price of $75,000!

So 420 out of 80,000 small cent auctions only have 1 1909-s VDB in it and theres no telling how many thousands of pennies there are in many/most of the auctions....It probably at least 1 out of 100,000 cents listed on Ebay is a 1909-s VDB. Hummm nope dosen't sound rare to me at all their running rampant on every street corner :) Just busting your balls there Barry but if the 1909-s isn't considered rare when compared to other cents then I guess "Our" definition of rare will just have to differ a bit...

I'm not sure I understand you Scotty, are you saying you only found 1 09-s VDB on ebay? There are numerous on there right now.

Rare = hard to find.

There are tons on ebay RIGHT NOW. That's not rare.

Also there is a "true definition" of numismatic rarity and the 09-S VDB is not even close.

NAH, I was saying that 420 out of 80,000 small cent auctions include/are for a 1909-s VDB penny.... I was guessing that roughly 1 in 100k small cents on Ebay listed are 1909-s VDB cents does that make it rare??. I was simply stating that in comparision to other wheats there is relatively a small amount to be had. So thinking on that principal I completely agree now with everything you said above :) Just because a cent has a low mintage in comparision to other cents does not mean its rare it may just mean it valuable.. Very good point there Barry!!
