First I would like to introduce my self. My name is Nick, and I, like most of you, enjoy searching circulated coins. I have been going through 2 bank boxes of pennies a week now for about a month, and besides separating the the copper pennies and the wheat pennies, I have been setting aside my 1998, 1999, and 2000 pennies to check for the wide AM.

Here is where I need the help of those more knowledgeable with regard to pennies. I set aside what I thought was a 1999 penny, and when I checked the reverse, I found the wide AM. In my hasty joy I didn't check the front well, and when I did, I noticed that it was a 1990 and not a 1999.

My question is - are wide AM cents common in years other than 1998, 1999, and 2000 which would make my 1990 wide AM worthless?

Only the 1998, 1999, 2000, and reportedly 1996. Also, check for 1992 and 1992-d close AM.

Are you saying that those are the only ones that exist, or that those are the only ones that have any value?

Those are the ones with value. Try going to google and search penny errors. There is alot of good information on these and other errors and varieties. Also, there are many books and guides out there that are a must to have in you are really serious about finding and collecting errors and varieties! Good luck!

Among the 98-99-00 years, the 1999 sells for MUCH more than the 1998 and 2000. But all three have premiums.
I haven't really studied the 92 and 96, so I don't know.

From one newbie to another I say welcome. That 28 to 31% copper penny rate is pretty lofty compared to my 16%. Your score on wheaties is outstanding as well. Hope those numbers keep up for you.

The 1998, 1999, and 2000 are documented Wide AMs. It is also my understanding that there could possibly be an error for the S mintmark coins of those years and that would be a close AM. The 1992/1992D Close AMs are also documented. They are much more valuable and they do exist. I was able to hold a slabbed one at the Summer FUN show that a guy had recently found in Central Florida.

There are rumors that these errors could exist for other years. Mistakes do happen. However, it would need to be authenticated. Some of the coins that people believe to be a Wide AM are nothing more than a polished die error. Find a web site with good information on errors including pictures or if you struggle with internet like I do then get this book. I have purchased both issues of the book: Strike It Rich With Pocket Change.

This is an informative book with great pictures for errors and the price is very reasonable.
