Question about Common Wheat Ear Cents

Postby Sheba » Thu Sep 20, 2012 2:23 pm

Hi all,

My LCS offered 2 cents a piece for common wheat ears from 1940 - 1958 (Philadelphia and Denver only...I am keep the "S' mints of those years seperate for now.)

What do the folks on the forum think? Is that a fair price ... a reasonable price or too low? Appreciate all the feedback on this subject I can get.

Thanks everyone!
Sheba

You should be able to get 3.5-4 cents each on the forum.

I wouldn't sell wheats for 2 cents a piece. That's a buck a roll. You're leaving money on the table. I know a handful of people who will buy them at 3 cents a piece all day long.

You should get at least 3 cents each. Don't know if you have a full bag or not but if you do you could start them out on feebay for $159.00 shipped and see what happens.

I believe that my LCS pays 3 cents for common Wheats. The purchase price is 6 cents. I wanted to buy some of them...but I figured that I could get them at a little better price, either through searching boxes or.....buying them from someone on RealCent?

That is true, but those bags are listed as unsearched, and have been proven to be unsearched.

Still wondering what the general opinion of what small premium the S mint common wheats command over the other mints.

Probably about a penny more. If you can get 3 cents for common P & D's you should be able to get at least 4 cents and maybe 5 cents for S mints.

I think the going rate on commons is 3.5 cents. Daviscfad and I both sell commons at that price. Solid S mint bags depend on the market. I think Daviscfad has them at $350 a bag and I sell them at $300 a bag. 1943-S cents sell for about 1000-1100 a bag.

I should have been a little clearer that HCBTT was selling unsearched bags at 5 cents. I wasn't criticizing HCBTT in the least, but rather pointing out that 6 cents for common wheats was too high.

Yeah, 6 cents would be too high, that's why I passed on them at my LCS.

I'm not sure what my LCS sells wheat pennies for, but he does only give 2 cents for every one bought. I brought a good handful in and was suprised with what he gave me in return. I was assuming 3 or 4 cents per wheat, but you know what they say about "assuming". I have not gone into that place again. Once I get my 10 posts again, I'll sell all my extras on here unless I get that hoarding "twitch" again.

Common wheaties sell for 4.5 cents each at Tulsa LCS. $225.00 for a bag. (Actually, this was about a year and a half ago.)

Price of course depends on whether you are buying or selling. 2 cents is a bit on the low side.. I bet he is not getting too many at that price. But if he is able to get hoards at that price maybe there is room for him to sell them to you at 2.5-3 and then you can flip them on here or ship them wholesale for 3.5.
