Best way to store the hoard?

Postby sheepdog_tx » Wed Oct 24, 2012 2:25 pm

Right now I'm rolling my finds by year and putting them back into the penny boxes. However as one can imagine this is time consuming but if I ever want to come back to say check for 1972 double dies or something else I might have missed its quick to do so. However not sure I can keep it up, is there a better way?

Buy now as quick as you can. Sort later when the supply dries up! :)

I don't bother sorting pennies by date. The only sort that I do is to seperate the Wheats from the Memorial cents.
Some point later on I'll probably sort down the wheats but that's a way off.

I just put the memorial coins in rolls and in a brink's box.

There are others on this site who put them in all type of things, buckets, freezer bags, drums, and what have you. It's really up to your expectations.
Don't look back. Something may be gaining on you.

Neither a penny or a nickel is worth face value anymore.

I'm just a poor wayfaring stranger.

Mint bags.. just put 300,000 in each bag. Just sort the copper out for now. You can always go back and date sort or pull wheaties later when the supply runs out. Now is the time to sort as fast as you can. Kitty litter buckets work pretty well for storing loose coppers also.

Been sorting / stacking for a little while, nothing major. I pretty much use 1 gallon ice cream pails or the big Utz Pretzel containers for dumping pennies into.

When it comes to sorting, I always sort the wheats. When I want to get obsessive about it I sort all the way up to 1974, that way I can fill Whitman book #2 if I want.

The ones that I do sort, are by year and mint. These are rolled and put into penny boxes

Oh, this is the worst-looking hat I ever saw. What, when you buy a hat like this I bet you get a free bowl of soup, huh?

Oh, it looks good on you though.

True, but good luck transporting that around! It works well if you never plan on moving.

I really like these for rolled cents.. it's almost like they were designed to hold 100 rolls perfectly.

In Oklahoma we fill up our Tornado Shelters. Safest place I know of.
After all, everyone knows the best way to find a tornado is look for all of the people holding up their phones. which means all that space just goes to waste anyways.

Put the drums on pallets first and then that solves your transportation issue

The 50 cal ammo cans will hold a hundred bucks worth of copper....have to shake it but they will fit. A five gallon bucket will hold $250 FV with the lid on.

you get the small size pallets or make them, think 2x3s are a standard size if you find them, 2x2 would be great but i havent seen them as a common pallet

Hand sorter so not so much sorting as others and not so much space needed to store. I am now rolling all coppers and storing in $25.00 bank boxes (that I've received when picking up at banks). I do separate all the wheats however but its not difficult when hand sorting. Don't think this 'old guy' could keep up with a Ryedale though

Now let's see ... where is that blasted cat! I'm hungry. woof, whine, drool, sniff ... 'here kitty, kitty, kitty, nice kitty. Where are you little kitty?

Best way to store the hoard would be to have the Portland Mint store it for you.
