First box of pennies

Postby RedRockGirl » Wed Dec 12, 2012 11:32 am

What have you guys done to me? I just started through my first full box of pennies.

I'm 3/4 of the way through hand sorting. 8 wheats including a really good 1911 s. :D
No luck on the copper though. I'm averaging about 10%. Here's hoping my next box turns up better.
Happy Hump day!

I would be really happy with 10% copper if I could find an 11s in each box! Care to put up a pic of the coin? We love pics!

Sorry for the rough percentage, atleast that 11s sweetens the deal! Enjoy the ride and don't blame us when your family complains about the addiction :)

You should post you find here http://realcent.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=19695 as only one 1911-s has been found this year.

I've NEVER found an 11S. And I've sorted a few... Way to go!

I would search a box with no copper at all if I knew I would get a 1911-S out of it!

I'm thinking the majority of members here might have NO idea who that is. But it's still quite funny for those that do.

Very nice find. What state are you in? With red rocks i'm guessing Arizona. I've been hand-sorting in New Jersey for about 6 months and averaging about 28% in my boxes so far. I'm sure your % will improve with time.

I'm Utah. First box was 13% copper and 8 wheat. Second box is looking pretty similar. I'm not too worried. Sorting is like running to me, soothing somehow. I'll pick up from my CU tomorrow and see if that's any better.

You then need to post it here as it might be a year are so before some one else finds one. :o http://realcent.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=19695 as only one 1911-s has been found this year.

Not even the seasoned veterans find 1911-S's commonly. That's quite a lucky find for a novice! Congrats. It more than compensates for the pitiable copper percentages...hopefully that improves for you!

Handsorters find all the good stuff. When you run 4- 5 Ryedales at once you don't see these gems. Sometimes i sort through my coppers pulling wheats but haven't found anything exciting.

This is also another benefit of being on the west coast. More S mint coins

That 1911-S is worth more than the rest of the box combined

Congrats, and welcome to RC, I've been handsorting a few years myself, and still get exited about finding anything low mintage. Get one of those little red boxes for storing your good finds in 2*2's, I filled one up, always note the date I found it, etc. Cheap excitement and thrills, it's been fun.
