Stupid criminals.
A couple years ago some guy in my town was killed trying to steal a live power cable.

All these copper thefts make we wonder if there is not an underground for coin copper that does care a bit about the melt ban and has "fenced" the product anyway. I mean, people are not even thinking about the Russian roulette they play when they try to steal copper items. Seems there must be another faction of criminals that quietly collect copper and watch their money grow nicely over time with aid of a participating scrap yard. I am not encouraging nor condoning it, but these thieves that get caught or fried trying to steal a few hundred dollars of copper must be on one side of the Gaussian curve. The other side could be the ones that ignore the melt ban and take their chances that way.

Someone cut the fence around a huge substation just north of us last spring. They cut a ground wire and something made contact that shouldn't have. It got so hot it turned the concrete floor to glass.... :o No one ever showed up at the hospital's in the area looking like a french fry so I'd say someone got really lucky! Bastards knocked out the power to about 1/4 of the county though!!
