Going rate for George V Canadian Pennies

Postby Pennysaved » Sun Jan 13, 2013 10:24 am

Now that so many Canadian pennies have been melted down, are the older George V pennies from the 20s to 40s going for a higher premium than melt?

The oven is turning on Feb. 4th.No pennies have been melted yet.

The Royal Canadian Mint starts collecting one-cent coins on Feb. 4 for melting and recycling of the metal content, with some six billion pennies expected to be surrendered by Canadians over the next six years.

I'm going to hold on to my stash until at least Summer to see how the melt has affected the pricing (and public awareness). Also keep an eye on e-Bay to see if the pricing trends are moving up.

The melt might be bad for pricing in the long run. Once pennies no longer circulate, less people will collect them...
267,500 pennies and 186,000 nickels searched. Hand sorter.
