Starting a Tribe (and questions about yours)

Hi
I will put this up in the tracking threads as well, but I wanted to share it here since my primary motives to CRHing is accumulating copper bullion. Last night I found my 2nd Indian Head Penny of the year! It is a 1909, I crossed my fingers before I flipped it over, but that was not enough to make an S appear on it.

All I can say is that luck must have allot to do with it. I have only searched 11 boxes this year so far. I recall from my days on TNet that most people said they discovered 1 Indian Head Penny per 100 boxes.

I would like to hear on average how much in FV do each of you search per Indian Head cent discovered? Thanks for your replies.

HH,
Silver Runner

Coin-grats on your finds. I've done well over a ton of cents and not found a single IH.

I bought 5 IH cents from the LCS ($1.25ea) to make sure my comparators reject them properly. Both comparators in both of my sorters reject all 5 of my store-bought IHs. Yet, I've never pulled one from the wild. I don't get it.

note:
My sorters use a Zn reference in the fist comparator and a Cu reference in the second one. Foreign coins, us dimes, early wheats, and badly corroded Zn memorials fall to the final reject bin. All 5 of my store bought IHs fall to the final reject bin.

I get one for every 3-4 bags usually ($200 face) but I never order pennies. All of mine come from customer returns in $50 bags right off the coin counters. I may go 10 bags before I see one and then get 2 in the next bag so it's kind of hit and miss.

The only way I can get them with the Ryedale is to run the zincs back through on a zinc accept run with the sensitivity turned up. This also knocks out a few pre 1940 wheats that were missed on the copper accept run.

It has taken a bunch of bags but I think our tribe has topped 30 now.

Wow. That's a lot. I also only search bags and I've never got one...

14 rolls!!! Step it up my man.

If Adam Young dropped 14 rolls, it would not be worth his time to pick them up.

Tribe is at 4
Number of cents searched around $3000
So I guess around $750 per Indian

Keep sorting

You're on a good pace, I have yielded one lonely IH (1906 - AG) from $800+ searched.

Thanks for the info everyone. It seems that it takes both luck and persistence to start a tribe.

I searched around $8,000 in pennies last year and found 18, in the past 3 years of sorting I have just over 1 full roll worth. Now flying eagles are even harder only 1 in all that time, and 1 Army & Navy Civil war token.

I cannot confidently give an average because I've only found one IH spill once a few years ago and have found nothing since. It was by luck that I came across those IHs, but there hasn't been any average but zero otherwise.

UPDATE: Found my first (and second) indian head cent today. There were two in this bag. I'm only a few weeks away from stacking my 2nd ton, all from bags. I stopped thinking about finding an indian head cent long ago. This bag had a few early wheats, but nothing extraordinary and a typical amount of brass. It did have a 1917D and 1917 plain to go with the 1917S I found last weekend.

Quite satisfying.
