Newbie here--I followed a link from kitco, and your stories piqued my interest. On the way home from work I stopped at several different banks and sweet-talked tellers out of over a hundred dollars in pennies, so buying them won't be a problem. (Several dozen banks and fifteen Coinstars within twenty miles of my house.) I've hand-sorted about $40 worth, and my return on investment, even factoring in Coinstar's 9% cut, is 39% at today's copper price. I'm going to take this more seriously if I can figure out how to sell the copper ones.

Can't really afford a Ryedale at this point, but I could swing one of those $50-60 units on eBay. Does anyone have any info regarding the accuracy of either of these units? (I'd be more afraid of dumping a few zincs in the copper than losing a few coppers.)

tinhorn, look for bank branches with coin counters. Even if you need a no fee checking account, it beats paying the coin star 9% fee. Just remember, don't dump where you buy.

I have used both and can say the Ryedale when set properly is 99.8% on the money. I started out with a 50 dollar eBay unit and found myself having to go back and recheck my copper because it would let one slip in about every 100-150 coppers. It doesn't sound like much but if you intend to sell and the buyer starts to find zinc in his/her purchase, that would be bad. With the Ryedale and a double sort I rarely see a zinc, only one in the last 400 dollars worth of sorted coppers. And that might of happen from a coin jam or the zinc bouncing out of a full bucket into the copper side. The Ryedale is really the best way to go if you want to generate volume and be accurate with any sort of speed. Good luck!

Don't waste your time buying the cheapo sorter....you will regret it and end up buying a ryedale anyway! PM ryedale and he can make you a deal. I think he is still selling his $100 ones?

there are dozen or so threads on here about sorters....they all end the same...buy the Ryedale....it is a premium device...the $500 unit is cheaper than the $800 unit...but ask for the $100 unit and you will like it, there are two types, they are not advertised on the website.

There is a $800 unit?

The 800.00 machine is no longer available. It is the same as the 500.00 machine, it was just inside a case. Buy a ryedale, the others on ebay are not as good.

Oh ok I gotcha.

As mentioned above buy the Ryedale. I wasted my money on the cheap one and bought the Ryedale within a couple of months and there is absolutely no comparison.

I bought the cheap one off Ebay, new to this and havent formed an opinion on it yet.

But 500-$800!

Y'know, I really did look for sorter threads before starting this one! I found one that showed a picture of the new entry-level Ryedale, and the sorter unit itself looks identical to the one on my eBay watch list. I sure do like Ryedale's hopper and feed wheel, though.

I anticipate upgrading to a serious sorter, but simply cannot spend that kind of money this early in the game. Heck, I don't even have that kind of dough to invest in pennies yet!

I started the same way! Handsorted for atleast two months, then got the entry level ryedale. I'm really satisfied with it, haven't had a single problem with it! But I'm definitely ready to get the apprentice now! because it's hard to hand feed $800 a week into my Ryedale, while also working 40 hours a week!

First off, welcome aboard! second, maybe someone will do a layaway program for ya!

I hand-sorted for two or so years. Then I bit the bullet and bought a Ryedale.

I always thought it was silly when I read on the forum that the only regret people had about their Ryedale was that they didn't buy it sooner.

Yeah. That's how I felt. Buy the Ryedale when you have the chance.

Just starting I would get the new ryedale frankensorter, this machine is just a dream, Ive sorted 37,500 coins and found a total of 7 zn in the copper pile. No over flow of copper to the zn pile, and the wheats always where they should be. The machine speeds up the process greatly and I am very happy with it. I traded in my ace for it and am very glad I did!!!!!!!

I sorted $800 yesterday. Took me about 2 Hours. I do need to mention that I am using 3 Ryedales , buy loose in bags and pre-run them through a coin counter to get rid of the bent , sticky, stuck together, etc coins.

It takes me about 30 mins a box, so it takes me about 16 hrs to sort $800. So probably a total of 28 hrs when you figure in making boxes, bagging coins etc. Hopefully I'll win that Ryedale in that Christmas contest. If not it will probably be a month or two till I can buy one
