Nice Low Budget Score

Postby silverflake » Tue Feb 26, 2013 11:56 am

Well, I have been pulling copper pennies from circulation now for about 10 years. I had always lamented that I could never luck into any nice "scores" that I read members here coming into. Not that I didn't celebrate your finds, I just wondered why, with all my sorting, I could never get something other than the usual statistical expectations of copper, wheat and Canadian.

That said, over the last few months, I have started to "score" a little. I have listed a couple of them on here already. No need to rehash, but listen to what happened today:

Like many of us here, my budget is tight lately. I was out running some errands this AM and had $10 to spare on some pennies. Figured I would get my obligatory 20% copper and still have $8 left to make it until Friday - payday. Well I ask for $10 in pennies and teller pleasantly hands me rolls, two at a time through the window and each roll is in old, pink wrappers, with hand written dates on them. I get them all and go back to my track. 15 rolls were old pink with dates on them - 13 rolls from the 60's ranging from 1960 - 1965 with 3 of them "D" mints. 2 other rolls were 1953-D and 1956-D wheats. I went home and broke them open and all were labeled correctly! Woo Hoo! So, I have 5 more rolls left to search, unmarked CWR's. Would you believe all 5 rolls were solid copper with no date later than 1974?!!!!!! Man, I was psyched! Good score for me.

Oh, and before anyone says it, yes - I am going back!

keep stacking!

Find out if they brought in anything besides pennies!!

Nice One. As the others said I would definitely go find out if any other coins were turned in. The old bat just might have cashed in all of the coins the old guy worked so hard for years to save.
If you are waiting for the "correction" to buy you need to realize that the increasing prices ARE the correction.

Went back. Nothing. Either I got everything or anything else was traded out already.

Oh well, I will enjoy the score I got.

beauanderos, come on man! This stuff doesn't happen to me! Really not that big of a deal. Besides if it ever did happen on a grand scale, I have a big ol' F-150 to lug it to the preppers conventions! ;)

Just keep stacking, my friend.

I can totally relate to the little charge you get from this sort of thing. I've been known to unwrap an odd looking roll or two at a stop light on the way home from the bank... just couldn't help myself ;) .

beauanderos - I completely got it! Good stuff! Was trying to shoot it back but my sarcasm didn't come across well in the message. As far as the score, I can't deny, though I am broke and borrowing from my wife, I am still jazzed about it and made for good dinner time conversation with my two boys.

Keep hunting (and stacking).
