1999 Wide AM

Postby HoardCopperByTheTon » Wed Mar 20, 2013 12:22 am

Tonight at coin club a good buddy of mine showed off the wide 99 Wide AM he found this week.. the most valuable coin he has ever found in circulation. He is trying to make me look at all those darn zincs!!!

Nah.. he just likes to look at every coin for varieties. I just gave him a couple of hundred rolls of BU copper cents of the dates with better varieties to go through. Last time I did that he found me some "Prisoner" cents.

Another collector in our area recently found a 1992-D Close AM.. worth a couple of grand in AU. I really gotta start looking at all those zincs I am letting slide through my hands.

I just sent back the zincs from 3 $50 bags I ran through yesterday. I didn't check 'em. It's hard to do that!!!!!

I did see a couple 1998's, 1999's, and 2000's but all were normal. Just the same with the 1992D's and 1992's! I saw a bunch of 1983's too. Some nice coins just no errors or varieties to make me stop and go through ALL $100+ face.

Coins are out there.....I don't have the time unless I am at work!!! Go UNION!!!

***UPDATE***

I have the zinc rejects from bag #4 and it looks like someone has made me HAVE to search them for error and varieties!!!!

You know who you are!!!!! (HCBTT)

But, on a more cheerful note, I just went through all $50+ face of my recent coppers. Just looking for wheats, indian heads, stray zincs, or anything that will catch my eye. I DID NOT look at every coin. If the reverse was looking at me, it never got a second glance from me. I ended up with 30 more wheats, 10 more Canadian coppers, and 2 interesting coins that caught my eye. One, only because I do look for certain dates. And the other was PURE LUCK.

PICTURES ON THE WAY!

Lucky for me....the reverse WAS NOT up or this one would be hanging out with a bunch of "normal" coppers!

Copper #2 I saw because of it's color and date. 1960D has some decent errors and varieties. It caught my eye. 2 die chips(filled "B" and extra metal by the "6") and a crack on the back of Abe's head.

I've never found a 99, but have almost a whole roll of 98 and 00 wide AM's. No luck on the 92's either. Those are the only ones I look for. I put them all in a cup as I hand sort and go thru them later.

The 98's and 2000's are much easier.. I think TJCF has a hoard of them. I have heard up to $500 for a nice 99 Wide AM. Of course the 92-D CLAM can go for up to $20K or so.. unless it's really, really nice.. then I think the auction record is something like $67K. And I think the 92 CLAM is even tougher than the D.

Darn you TJCF.. you are gonna slow me down. Now I have to look at all those 60-D cents too? Send me the list of what to look for.. I have a lot of solid rolls both Circ SD and and BU LD and SD that I could go through.

All I have left is a MS64/65 1999 WAM.

I either sold, gave away, or auctioned off all of the 1998's and 2000's.

I have never found the 92D or the 92 CAM. I can say I looked at 10,000+ 92's looking for them.

I have 98, 99 & 2000 wide AMs. I do not know how many of each. I just put them all aside in a separate container. I am not a collector of varieties so maybe one of these days I will sell them all.

Not a waste of time if you find one. I suppose you don't waste your time looking for 69-S double dies either? I got another large box of BU copper rolls in an auction tonight. Looking forward to checking them for varieties.. especially those 69-S cents.. I can't not look.

Back in the day this is what "penny sorting" meant. Look for varieties, throw the worthless copper back

Back in the day.. all pennies were copper. We went down the to the bank and hot our rolls or bags of pennies.. then we spread them out on the floor and flipped them over so the backs showed. We sorted for wheats. Those were the days.

Do you know around what time common/late wheats became worth searching for? I've always wondered about that...
267,500 pennies and 186,000 nickels searched. Hand sorter.
