Newbie hits 20,000 mark!

Well I've been hand sorting since Nov. 27th and I now have 20,000 cu memorials. I've filled two 68 lb medium flat-rate boxes one penny at a time. My best find was one (1900) Indian head. During that time I accumulated 386 wheats with the best being a 1909 P. My success rate is 17% for finding cu memorials.

A very enjoyable hobby and I especially like reading all the posts for their great information. Merry Christmas to all. :)

Congratulations Don. I started about a week or two before you, and I just past the 15,000 mark. Keep up the good work.

That is some heavy duty hand sorting if you have 20,000 in just one month! I've been hand sorting since the Fall of 2006 and I have about 65,000 with a total goal of 100,000.

i myself was a pretty active hand sorter when I started and could usually do a box an hour or pull about 6-700 Cu's an hr.
Good job and keep sortin'!

Sometimes I can do 2 or 3 boxes at work when it's slow. Helps to get those zincs ready to dump on my days off. Plus alot less interference to my hobby at work. Oh..and I get paid at the same time!

I've been off work since Thanksgiving with a damaged shoulder so this has allowed me the time to sort through a lot of $25 boxes. Within a six mile radius I have five Bank of Americas and four Wells Fargos. I buy all my boxes from the B of A's (rotating between each one) and make all my dumps at the Wells Fargo's (rotating between each one as well). So far so good with the system as I have accounts with both banks!

At 17% that means you hit $200 on your 48th $25 box...and you're only averaging 8 wheats a box. You are one dedicated new searcher....my hat's off to ya! I think you need to find a better penny source...17% is horrible. Hope your percentages go up in the new year!

Congrats!

After a couple of weeks I have 18 lbs of coppers.

Approximately 2700 coins. If 3 rolls equal a lb.

No IHC's but about 40 wheats to 1939 and a few dirty clad dimes. No silver.

I dont know what my goal is, but its high. 100 lbs, eventually maybe a ton.

Its nice to see Copper holding 4.25ish.

Thejonascollegefund,

I wholehearted agree. 17% is indeed very frustrating especially when other board members are realizing 25%. I can't even fathom such a lofty number. Sometimes I'll come across a box with only 12%. This week I am going to start asking to buy any customer rewraps they might have as I have heard these can yield some good results. Nevertheless I still enjoy the hunt and it relaxes me during my rehab.

I've been a member since late November also and I've went through almost 15,000 pennies. The only reason why I haven't done a lot more is because I've been busy sorting (and stashing) lots of nickels (over 7000 searched), plus dimes (9000 searched), quarters (1000 searched..I gave up on quarters), and halves (4600 searched). So that's around 36,000 coins, give or take a few. But, I've also done a ton of reading and researching in that time too. Plus read up on stuff here too. Plus starting new Dansco folders and upgrading coins as I go along. You could say that I have the PM bug. :)

With the exception of one sealed $25.00 penny box, I only do customer wrapped rolls. I'm averaging 24%-32% on my pennies, so I can't complain!
I'm at 66 Wheats (.45%) and about 30.8% copper haul overall. Not a bad start. My highest percentage on CWR rolls was 52%.

I don't have a set goal/limit on my copper pennies.

Congrats, pennypicker...keep plugging away! Hoard everything you can.

something else to think about,I have found that if you walk into a bank and ask for hand rolled (not bank boxes),the percentage goes way up.But I warn you you will get some ODD looks from the teller, Just explain that your talking about rolls that customers have rolled and brought to the bank! Hope this helps increase your yield,Good Hunting

On the same note a ex coworker who also lives in Medford Oregon filled his Unemployment claim from Mexico online unly to find out Oregon logs the url and the rules state you must be ready to go to work for the check. He had to pay the weeks back that he was in Mexico. PS Don if you get board let me know and you can use our Ryedale.

Congrats on the IH and the 1909.

I didn't find either last year. In fact, my Ryedale reads 1.15 million pennies and I have only found 1- 1909 and 4-5 Indian heads.

+1 for hand rolls. Newbie sorter here but just got $150 in dimes(skunk) $30 nickels(skunk) and $11.50 in pennies. 21 of the 23 penny rolls were 98% wheats! Beginners luck I guess.

Yes this is an old thread. I sold all of my cu cents on this board six months ago just prior to my moving from California to Oregon. I am now stacking Peace & Morgan dollars. The people at the local Medford, Oregon coin shop are very nice and let me cherry pick the Peace & Morgans from two large boxes containing each type. Back in California I simply got tired of the rediculously long lines to acquire and return cents--just wasn't fun anymore!! And it has to be fun, right? :D

Be careful...there is an enormous amount of Chinese fake Morgan n peace dollars out there. Junk silver is much safer
