Achievement #432 - Broke the coinstar

Postby Engineer » Tue May 07, 2013 10:43 pm

I took a pile of really nasty coins to the coinstar, and managed to plug it up with sticky cup holder cents.

It cost $1.50 in fees to see the inside of the machine, but it was worth the price just to see how the sorting mechanism works...and to get rid of the nasty stuff that I haven't dared to run through my bank's counter.

Filling up the machine is on my list of things to do. I actually spoke to manager at my local cvs and asked him to call me the next time they make a pick up :-)

I've had one break or fill up on me. They had to get out all of my coins that didn't make it and give them back to me. The machine is at my grocery store. It was down for 2 weeks after that! Maybe it was a few of those ate-up zincs I dug out of the ground while metal detecting!

I must be missing something. What's the motivation to deliberately break a Coinstar machine?

My motivation was to find out just how poor of coins it would take. I'm sure we all run across our share of uglies, and rather than eating the cost or causing problems at our dump banks, cashing them in for Amazon credit seems a pretty good option.

The lesson I learned was bent stuff is ok, but we should probably soak our sticky coins in a cup of water so the attendant won't need to clean the coin rail.
