Is it better to have pennies rolled?

Postby Broseph » Sun Jun 09, 2013 4:02 pm

I'm sure my bank would roll my copper pennies for me. Would it be easier to store/ship them? I think I might try it out.

What do you guys think?

Why not? If your bank will do it for free, and you can get nice tight crimped over ends...I'd do it.

Though some future buyers may not appreciate opening all the rolls

If your bank rolls coins they most go through a lot of coin. Will they sell you bags of coins.

They occasionally get bags of coins from vending machine personnel, but after only getting 1 or 2 silver dimes for $500 face searched (and no canadian dimes) I realized that machines probably weight them out and lower the ration of finds.

No penny bags, since machines don't take them :/

I think it depends on spare time available, how many you plan on sorting, and how quickly.

Following my OCD tendencies, I prefer to roll mine, then put in the $25 bank "brick" boxes. Easy to count entire stash at a glance. Easy to stack 3-5 high. Easy to label contents. Easy to move. Sleeves and boxes are free from the bank.

I say that as a casual hand-sorter and occasional buyer.

If I had the type of automated sorting operation several folks here do, processing hundreds of thousands of pennies quickly by machine, I'd probably put mine in those 5-gallon buckets you can buy at the home improvement stores.

I mean having them roll them with their machine, not by hand

I'm a bit more ocd than zincanator. I roll mine, tape each end, mark each roll Cu, box them in string boxes, glue the flap shut, and then mark the box Cu and date it.

My buddy sorts coins and he says that his banks dont take rolled coins because people were shorting the rolls. It all has to go in the coin counter-
