Storing your pennies- kitty litter or 5 gallon buckets

I seem to remember some talk on using kitty litter buckets ( Tidy Cat) or 5 gallon buckets with lids. I have access to both ( two cats and work for 5 gallon) and wanted hear if anyone had used these and how many do you get in each? Any problem with them breaking or cracking, also do you put them in bags or loose?

I use the kitty litter buckets to catch the pennies when they come out of the Ryedale.
About $275 fit in a 5 gallon bucket. More if you shake them. I wouldn't stack more than 2 high.
Tip to save your back. Put the 2nd on top then fill it. This way you won't have to pick up a full bucket.

Fort Knox heavy plastic deposit bags for me....started with my hoard in kitty litter buckets, but switched them all into these bags for accurate counting, easier transport, and to keep the pennies sealed from outside elements that may come along.

Jacer, i'm not sure what you mean by outside elements, unless your buckets don't seal.
I stored in kitty litter buckets, but the lids weren't really 'airtight' so i opted to start using 4 gallon buckets. They can fit a little over 140 lbs so just over $200/bucket and the lids are very good at keeping contaminants out. I chose 4 gallon food buckets over bags because of the airtight element.

Kitty litter buckets brake down quicker than most 5 gallon buckets.

I use 1 quart plastic milk jugs.
Easy to move and stack.
The will degrade if exposed to UV (like sunshine).
Otherwise, PVC tubes (3") with end caps glued on makes good burial caches. 3' is about as long as I'd make them for ease of handling, some folks advocate adding a desiccant pack.

I use the Kitty Litter buckets during processing. I think the regular size one holds about 18,000 coins unshaken, and the bonus size one holds 22,000 coins.

Yes, those buckets do seal well Job...But if something such as a flood in the basement came along, I question their ability to hold up and think eventually they would let water in. I feel confident that these bags give me a tight seal and that the pennies would be high and dry in nearly any situation.

Good 5 gallon buckets seal water tight. They sell/ship/store paint, oil, food products, etc. in them. That's what they are made for. I really question whether bank bags would be even be water tight to begin with (any little crease or wrinkle when you seal them could let water in), and secondary to that, how long the adhesive strip would hold up if submerged...
Even if they both have equal water sealing capabilities, In a muddy basement flood scenario I'd much rather hose off a bunch of 5 gallon buckets and let them dry than deal with all the nooks and crannies and handles on bank bags, and then have to dry one side and flip them to dry the other.
Nothing wrong with storing in bank bags, but I wouldn't do it for the purpose of water resistance. I'd use good buckets for that.

Definitely good points Nate, I think it is just a matter of preference. Both methods do an effective job, and to a degree, would fail under a certain level of stressful conditions. Although, I would say what most attracted me to moving my hoard into the fed bags was the ease of keeping an accurate and neat coin count, and ease of transport when the time comes to sell down the road. If a local guy comes to pick up $100 in copper, I can be ready and pick up a bag in each hand rather than needing to whip out the counter and split some out of a bucket.

They hold more if you take the litter out first.

Put them in FED bags and put 4 in each bucket. They will be sealed in a bucket for maximum protection and in bags for easy counting and selling.

I have found that a 55 gallon drum takes up very little floor space and holds a lot of pennies. And with four of them and a nice sturdy table/bench top makes a great work bench.

I just use the plastic coin bags. You should be able to get them free at the bank. I found 5gal buckets too hard to move.

Hi there-
Just for the sake of maximizing space, I broke down and got empty paper penny rolls. I store the sorted cents in the boxes I got them from. THE most space efficient way to store, and can be lifted without injury. Costs ya a couple bucks in supplies but looks nice and tidy when stacked.
Dunno about long term issues, but copper isnt too high on my totem pole- unless it's BU cents or something
