lol, so I sorted them to get, 1,000 cu, 1,000 zn.

I bought 6 bags last week from a bank I get their bags weekly. 4 of the 6 had 50% + copper one had 75%. I wonder how does this happen who turns these in. Ill have to inquire with the tellers.

I wonder if some of the weak hands are giving up on copper and simply sending the coins they saved up back to the bank.

A good chance. If there is a cash crunch or a sorter just wants to throw in the towel, then yeah, they get dumped in one grand maneuver, not unlike when Sigourney Weaver jumped into the molten metal with the Alien creature in her. Similar resolve IMHO. You have to do what you have to do.

I dumped some copper for silver this summer...others probably did the same.

Last summer I had 3 or 4 ctu's from my final copper hoard in the back of the Explorer. One Saturday, Dick's had a sale on golf stuff... and that was all she wrote. It was just way easier to hit the coin counter.
