I have three boxes copper pennys, i have no way of counting them. just wondering, do you guys go by the weight or count them to sell? how do i know how much mine is worth without counting? also, would a normal scale to weigh a person work? thanks

if they are all copper you can look up the weight. i think 1 lb is about 150 coins. a lot of buyers have counting machines. a normal scale will work but will not be very accurate. buy a postal or gram scale for $20 if you want greater accuracy.

I just use a normal bathroom scale, it has worked fine so far.

Also I weigh out 68.2 pounds for $100 of pennies, it should be about 68 Lbs but I want to make sure.

147 cu Lincolns weigh 1 pound and 5000 weigh 34 pounds. My digital bathroom scale is very accurate for weighing my 5000 penny lots.

On ebay, they are going any where from 1.7 to 2X face, with few asking even more.

I'm a buyer at 1.5 times face.

A quick and pretty accurate estimate is to multiply the weight in pounds by 1.5 to get face value in dollars. In your case, 25.5 pounds would have a face value of a bit over $38. This only works if the coins are all copper.

well, you have melt value, Face value and market price.

Melt value would be 25.5 times the price of copper. right now the melt value of your hoard is $111.31 , but it's illegal to melt them.

Face value is the money value times the number of coins or 1 cent time approx 3723 coins that you have( approx 146 coins per pound) = $37.23

market value is what a willing buyer will give you.

1.5 times face ($37.23) = $55.85.

Remember this golden rule, your 25.5 lbs. of copper are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them. In other words, if you can find a buyer that is willing to pay you a million dollars, then that's what they are worth...on the other hand you may only find someone that is willing to pay you 1.1X face value. You also have to throw shipping into the mix when you are considering selling. You have 25 lbs. to sell but if you wait until you have 68 lbs. or $100.00 face value copper to sell then your shipping expense per penny is as low as it can be.
