and I'm thinking, why the heck didn't he contact someone in the coin community first ??
there had to be a few nice coins in there if he'd been collecting since 1960

Got on the board to post this and saw it was already up. I wonder if anyone got them or they were sent off to Loomis. $25 bonus for a $100 turned in back in the 70s wasn't a bad deal.

I will call this bank in the morning....its probably 4 hours away....but it probably happed last week and the cents have already been sent to the vault/FED. I have done this before and the news stories are behind by a week or so.

Not there anymore, per the article:
"After freeing the coins from their containers, bank employees poured them into buckets and loaded them through a counter into bags, before shipping the pennies off to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation."
Why would the FDIC want these?

FDIC would not want them. Just an ignorant statement by the reporter. They were not sent to the Fed either. Just sent in to Loomis or whoever that specific bank uses for their coins. Not a biggie. Just an error by the writer.
