I know there are many many options, but I'd like to hear others' ideas on how to store copper pennies. Transportability has to be a consideration for me, so a 5 gallon bucket full of pennies just isn't reasonable as it would weigh too much. Right now, I am using 1 gallon paint cans. They can be bought empty and unused for $3-$4 each. One paint can holds 5000 pennies and weighs about 35 lbs so it's reasonable to carry if they need to be moved. They also stack easily. Rolling them would be a consideration, but I am thinking for resale purposes folks might not like rolls as the coins inside wouldn't be easily verifiable to be copper. Also, it takes time to roll. How do other people store their pennies?

I roll them and put 'em back in the $25 penny box. I tape the box and mark it COPPER, COPPER-UGLY ABES, and COPPER-1982. After that, you could stack the boxes on a pallet or put them into some sort of container of your choice.

When I've bought COPPERs, I preferred them rolled and boxed.

I store them loose in plastic kitty litter containers, but not the popular 5 gal. pails - these are the 21 pound upright pour-style containers with screw on lids.

I really need to consolidate the small stack I have.

Are those gallon paint cans plastic or metal??

I lucked out--my father-in-law smokes a pipe nearly nonstop, and is too tight to throw away the plastic containers. I've got a ton of 'em, and they each hold about 15 pounds.

Rolled and put back into a $25 box. Makes for easy stacking.

5 gal buckets here!

I use metal ones. They hold 5000 pennies pretty well, but I'd suggest heavy duty gloves if your going to move them far. Those thin metal handles dig in when lifting 35 pounds! I like hearing others ideas on storage. I'm surprised people roll the coppers, I might have to reconsider. I'm pretty new to this.

.30 cal ammo cans. Holds $50 easily and with a handle.

2 1/2 gal frosting buckets that I buy from work. Got about 100 for $20.

I use the 5 gal buckets to return zincs in. They hold a tad under $300, which is the banks daily limit.

I like to store my pennies in bulk. Large boxes work well - here is a sample of what that looks like.

I really like those Nickels!!

I've been thinking of putting them in boxes though so they can be stacked easier. I would roll them though, would take up valuable sorting time!

5 gal buckets with watertight lids, 7750 ea. Three large zip bags of 2500, one small zip 250. Manageable gross wt of 53 lbs, convenient cu wt 50 lbs. Safely stacked five high in the bat cave.

The brand new shiny pails add up $ wise, but they can always be utilized for other things.

Did boxes for the first batch and now I'm trying the coinlok bags. They don't stack as well but I can count out 50 bucks on my coin counting machine in about 10 minutes instead of rolling all weekend to put away two boxes worth. Also cheaper to bag then buy paper shot gun rolls. I may go back to boxes if the bags don't work out.

Cesariojpn...ok, so you cram $50 of pennies inside the 30 cal cans (these are great for rolled nickels by the way). Do you roll your coppers or are they loose in the 30 cal can? Just curious.

You can also get a postal weighing scale and measure by weight to get a very close approximation to $50. A good postal scale is accurate to .1 ounces which is 2.83 grams or 1 penny.

1 penny = 3.1 grams
1 pound = 453.59 grams
50 pounds = 22,679.5 grams or 22.68 kg or 800 ounces

And thats with Parcel Post postage rates!! I think you could shove one into a large flate rate box, but again, still expensive.
