Waffled Lincoln? Help I got an answer!!!!!!!!

Postby henrysmedford » Sat Mar 05, 2011 3:34 pm

We found this 2001 and the guy at the coin shop thought it might be a mint error . But he had not seen one like it. He said he would take it to the Long Beach Ca. show in June to ask if I could not find a answer by then.

Looks like intense heat may have caused it.

No, I think it's an error, look at the bottom on the obverse, there is a section where the rim is stamped twice. looks like it was hung up in the die.

My first impression is damage but I can't say for sure. I would let the dealer take it to the show and see what other dealers think.

Somebody just put it in a vice and squeezed the dog out of it?

It does not match the sides. Also looking at the rim the size stays the same.

Sure looks like it was run between a couple bevel gears or a chain and sprocket.

Not to derail Henry's thread, but here are pics of a REAL waffled coin. If anyone has an explanation for this weirdness, I hope Henry doesn't mind if you post it. And yup, the bumps appear around the edge, too.

Looks to me like it has been etched in acid. I mean the most recent image... not the one that started the thread.

If this website is right we both do not have a waffled coin--http://www.mintproducts.com/waffle-quarters-cancelled-at-the-mint-order-two-and-save.html
The dates are wrong.
"In 2003 the U.S. Mint began using machines to cancel coins with possible defects. The coins are put through high pressure rollers that obliterate much the coin's design. The cancelled coins are left with a corrugated or "Waffle"pattern. thus, the term Waffle Coin."

I got an answer from CONECA http://conecaonline.org/ Image
Hi Joe.

This cent appears to have been heated and then crushed. It's definitely not a minting error.

Cheers,

CONECA is a great organization and Mike Diamond is extremely knowledgeable. Maybe Franklin should join with all of the cool things he finds. There is a great magazine that you get every couple of months. Dues are reasonable too. I have been a member for about two years now.

Enjoy your coin searches, everyone. :geek:
