George V vs. IH

Postby biglouddrunk » Sat May 07, 2011 7:00 pm

Well I finally got my first George V today. A 1933 in decent condition much better than most early wheats you find. This got me to wondering how much harder is it to find a IH compared to a George V. Should one find 4 George V to one IH or some number like that? I know it more opinion that statistics since there are members here who have sorted a million plus without find a single IH.

Think like 10-12 IH's to 4 George V's. But 4 IH's came in one $50 bag. And 2 Georges came in one Brinks Box.

Been at it 4 years & almost 750,000 cents searched. I've found 8 IH & zero George V. But then I live in the S.E. US & average 2 Canadian Cu per box.

I've found one 1929 George V and two Indians, 1906 and 1907. So, I would say George V are a bit rarer, but what do I know?

I get lots of KGV's and no IH's. But I guess that makes sence since I live in Maine really close to Canada.

It only makes sense that the ratio will dramatically change depending on how close or far away you are located from Canada.

What really matters is the value ratio. On ebay common date, average circulated IH's sell for rougly .75 ea in groups of 50. Common date George V small cents, and 1933 is a common date, sell for .15 each in groups of 50. In other words IH's are five times as valuable.

People often describe the George V small cent as the Indian Head penny of Canada when it really isn't the case at all--value wise. :D

No V's, but 18 VI's :)

A bit surprising since the Canadian percentage overall is good.

I think the values comes from different sizes of the markets. The IH market being much larger than the George V market.

I have only found 1 George V in the wild but have been given many as gifts. Still no IH

George V 3---IH 1

Yeah, I guess G5 are proportional to distance from Canada. I get on average 2 canadians per roll so I should expect to find a G5 first. I am surprise that I have not found a singe IH. I've sorted maybe 10K by hand an have yet to find one. I'm actually surprised I've only found 1 G5. I have around $100 face worth of Canadian copper. It would seem they would be more common since they are pretty much the same size as the modern penny where IH are a little bit thicker it seems.
