Same here...I have a few tubes. I figure that if I'm already sorting cents anyway, and I hit a box with a bunch of uncircs, why not save 'em? I do the same with any uncirc cents if there are enough to justify it.

I save all AU and BU 2009 cents because of the low mintage, especially the Philadelphia Presidential ones. Most of the ones in circulation are still in really good condition since they've only been out a little while. Even though they're zincs, I can justify saving them because I think that they'll end up being worth a decent premium in the future.

I save all 2009s. #4P (mintage of 129,600,000) is lowest since 1955-S. Out of the last 90,000 pennies I've searched, only found 2! May just be my location- I've found about 200 of the #4D (mintage around 198,000,000).

Low mintage?! I'm finding TONS of these. I've been saving them only because they have the special things on the back, they will surely be worth more in the future since they were only made for 1 year.

Then again the 1967 Canadian centennial cent I just found apparently isn't worth anything...I guess that proves my theory wrong.

I just returned $25 of 2009's that i was saving. I find to many to save unless I find full uncirc. rolls and then I only save some of them.

As I knew this topic would eventually come up, I've been sorting my 2009 cents by type and mint mark. I decided this morning to run the numbers, and here's what I came up with. Out of 223,357 cents that I have hand sorted so far:

Log Cabin P - 239
Log Cabin D - 239

Formative P - 356
Formative D - 296

Professional P - 514
Professional D - 206

Presidency P - 4
Presidency D -283

That's a total of 2137 out of 223,357- or .956% By comparison, I've retrieved 4279 cents that are 2010- 1.91%. At least in my area, the #4P is scarce.

I don't think these will be worth much if anything. There are way to many people holding these, so mint 2009 pennies will be easy to come by for a very long time.

Except in a few years when new coin collectors come along that never had a chance to find 2009s. I predict few to be in circulation for much longer. I'm just going to put them in a jar and forget I have them for about the next decade, like most do with their pennies. At that point they will probably be worth at least slightly more than face, or I can simply go to the bank like normal....(by then zincs will be worth 2x face value!)

Exactly. I keep the ones that are in exceptional/AU condition. They're worthless right now, but wait until later. Once the melt ban lifts, and zincolns are more than FV, then there will be few of any mintages left in circulation.
