Why do you sort pennies?

I do not know why most people sort pennies. I am a hoarder, not a collector. In the end, we all will be cashing in the pennies for face value. If we die and leave the pennies to a family member; then the family member has the burden of unloading the pennies. Very few people will pay top dollar for old pennies. You have to hit the market just right or you will not get anything for them. So why do you sort the pennies?

I believe that all metals in this country have been grossly undervalued for quite a few years. . . As things revert back to some sort of a mean I feel full heartedly that they will continue to rise in value. I will be very surprised if 10 years down the road most base metals are not multiples higher than today.

I do it for the fact that if I can buy something that is worth at least $.014 for $.01 with absolutely no risk I will do it all day long.

Very few people will pay top for copper pennies ""TODAY"". Tomorrow should be quite different. At the current 2.4c melt for each copper penny, with the possibility of the US mint discontinuing the minting of pennies because it is unprofitable, I'm willing to take the chance to more than double my money every time I save a copper. Going down the road of the depreciating dollar only means that the penny will no longer be needed or useful for general commericial transactions. This, by itself, increases the odds, that smaller denomination coins will be phased out as the dollar more or less is demotinized. The more the copper penny is valued, the more the incentive to hoard them away. If at any time, the mint issues an edict that they are no longer going to mint pennies, the lifting of the melt ban for pennies is soon to follow. And, you know what will happen then don't you. :D So, why not get your share of coppers now, while you still can. That's why I'm hoarding them.

It's my little way of betting against the FED. And it gives me something constructive to do while I'm watching TV.

It's one of the few things I can do while I'm drinking without hurting myself, people around me, or breaking things.

I started looking through rolls to find what I needed to fill my Whitman folders. Then I moved on to looking for errors and varieties. Next I found out about the value of copper cents vs face value and I started selling them on ebay, then privately. I have a small stash set aside for myself but I can't say that I have a "Hoard" . I enjoy sitting at my table with a good light and maginfier looking through rolls and occasionally finding a keeper for my collection or something I can sell for a profit.

Because my cash flow won't allow me to get Halves as often as I would like! It's relaxing, every roll has some coppers, it keeps other people guessing as to my sanity, and I like it!

A) It's a hobby my brain likes. B) If our economy goes hyperinflation as some are predicting to happen in 6 to 9 months we'll all wish we sorted more pennies, halves, stashed nicks, and put more junk silver aside. If not then; C) There will come a day and time when "junk copper" will trade similar as junk silver does today. It's only a matter of time.

I just moved 400 lbs from my bedroom, to my workshop (concrete floors). Then I asked myself the same question.

Make sure you put you cents in the spot where they should stay.

8-). Paper is poverty,... it is only the ghost of money and not money itself. Experience has proved to us that a dollar of silver disappears for every dollar of paper emitted.

I decided to start sorting pennies. I am only sorting them by years. I am keeping all of my pennies; zinc and copper. I had to unbox everything and start over again. Now it is going to take longer before 1 box is filled. With OCD; sorting pennies is keeping me from unneccessary spending. :P

The same reason people sorted out the silver in 1965 until now. When the melt ban is lifted and copper is $10 + a pound you will kick yourself for not saving copper pennies.

Several reasons I sort:
1. It's fun (and relaxing)
2. No downside as long as I can buy them for face
3. I enjoy looking for certain dates and errors
