2 blows

Postby gojomoso » Tue Jul 05, 2011 2:37 pm

i went to the bank today to pick up pennies, and the first blow came when they said they had only 1 box available (i was looking for at least 8). The second blow came when i opened the box... all 2011's...
at least it was only one box :?

if they're BU, 2011 zincs are going for a fair amount over face (1.4 ish or so)... so it's not terrible

Yea that's about what I'm getting for them still.

I think I'd rather not have them though.

It's more trouble than it's worth. I just return them to the banks with my halves returns and exchange them for older boxes. For some reason the tellers like "the shiny pennies!"

how long will it last though? i mean will the 2011 boxes disappear just in time for 2012 boxes to take over?

Think about it. What would cause all these boxes to emerge? The disappearance of the older boxes of mixed circulating cents. What would cause that? Us... and the evil horde we have spawned  Hope this isn't a trend, because that would be pretty discouraging to go thru all the trouble of picking up boxes of nothing but zinc skunks. :o

Zinc happens! It could be worse. A few of the older members will remember when several of us were getting solid zinc boxes that were not shiny in our pickups.. therefor they had no potential market value. Imagine getting an entire 24 box order of circulated zinc boxes. Scales are a wonderful thing for fast sorting by the box.

HoardCopperByTheTon, What kind of scale do you use to weigh your boxes? I was thinking you would need something more accurate than a bathroom scale, and something with more capacity than your regular digital gram coin scale.

Thanks,

Going backwards...a teller handed me a box of 2008's.

99 more pickups and maybe I'll get a box of 1909.

Put the 2008's on eBay, you should get a better premium than a 2011 or 2010 box will fetch. I recently came across a 2007 box and I got $48.00+shipping for it and I probably could have done even better. I had that as the buy-it-now price and someone scooped it up in the first couple of hours. Guess I should have had a higher BIN price, but I am still happy cause I made a few bucks and I did not have to return them.

I forget the brand.. but it is a really good scale that they use for vending operations. You just put the coins on, select the denomination, and it tells you how much. For weights it has a 60 pound capacity and is accurate to 2 hundredths of a pound. It works off AC or the rechargable batteries. I think they are about $700 new.. but I paid considerably less of course.. I think I got it on the bay for about $100.

I actually got a few new rolls of 2007-D cents at work Friday. The lady that handles the cash said she will keep an eye out for more for me.
