Postal Employee steals pennies

I bought $100FV of copper last week and the box arrives empty. The tape on one edge looks like it was sliced open with a razor and the contents removed. The thief was kind enough to stamp the box "Damaged" and continue the delivery of the empty box. The box clearly did have a full load of pennies when shipped as it showed the usual crinkles on the sides of a box being lifted several times with heavy contents. Also, I have bought from the seller several times recently and have always been happy. Maybe they heard about the coming post office layoffs and thought this was their severance package. But I have to say I am really surprised that someone has the balls to risk to risk a felony to steal $100 ($90 after he dumps in the nearest coinstar).

Has this happened to anyone else?

Maybe it's the same razor wielding hump who cut open my envelope of 40% in June. That was also a $100 score, so the thieves work on volume rather than price. Of course, they have no way of knowing what's in the box until they open it, so he was probably disappointed it wasn't a box of mercury dimes.

My coin dealer says I should be so lucky to only lose 100 bucks a year.

Report it on the postal inspector website. If enough people report opened/missing/stolen mail patterns will emerge and they may act.

I've had this happen to me before. I was the buyer, another Realcent member was the seller. Talk to the Post Office, they might be able to help you out even though you didn't have insurance.

I find postal insurance a bit expensive, but I always use this site. $1.05 per $100 of coverage. Never had a claim, but I've read good things. This is the same company that has shipsaver insurance on eBay.

Thanks for the tips. I just reported it on the postal inspector website and will use the third party insurance in the future.

Next time someone gets 2 bags of 100% copper, think of me....

So Ed,

Will they insure coins? That would be great since I recently learned the the insurance offered by USPS does not cover coins or precious metals!

That's why I don't insure. It's a scam, and wastes your money. You think you have peace of mind due to the sense of security that "insuring" the contents brings... only to learn, if you ever file a claim... that they will point out that small print and deny the claim. Been there, done that.

Yeah, the fine print says no money, coins, etc. I say I sending copper bullion. A lie? Maybe, but I do what I need to do.

yeah if its a razor type clean cut it definately was theft as opposed to a tear or box ripping open. not to generalize as the postal worker who comes to my workplace is super friendly and nice and helpful but majority of them i deal with near my home are ghetto trash so really doesn't surprise me.
