And he's willing to accept layaway. He's living in McAllen, TX, which is on the border with Mexico. Here's the plan:
Sell the pennies on layaway to 10 people.
When all the final payments come in, cross the border and live in style for a while.

These exact photos were posted on a thread on another coin site, only the guy wasnt selling, just showing off the hoard....somebody posted a link to the thread on realcent, does anybody else remember this? That said-you have to wonder-is this the guy that was showing off his collection on the collectors site,or did somebody just snag the photos?

I'm with you. Smells.

Somebody just hoping to scam a $4000 down payment or two (or three). Anyone with the sense to stash that much coin would know how to spell one syllable words.

Here is the original thread from the PCGS message boards. The OP of that thread, and the auction appear to be typed with a bit of broken English, so maybe it is the same guy.

Wow $20,000 for only $88,000? Good grief

Wonder if he will take 2000000 pennies for it?

I saw more steels in my local dealers 'unsearched' bin of wheats for 4 cents each locally. If you have that many wheats every bucket should be peppered of steels of varying qualities because they made a butt load of 1943-p cents. I dont see any in any picture of any of buckets.

The reason you rarely see steels in wheat bags is cause they are so easy to pick out. I have an entire bag of 1943-S steel cents.. much better than the P mint ones.

But...but..but he said they were un-searched. He didnt pick any out.

Honestly I have this dealer guy who has costumers bring in their little coffee cans of wheats- eye balls them- and tosses them in to buckets. He will count out bags to 5000 with one of those old school hand crank counters and there ya go. Naturally there are steels in there but he doesnt bother to pull them out. He said its not worth him to pull out say 47 steels and price them at 10 cents each if he can keep them in there and sell the wheats as a whole for 5 cents 'unsearched'. I dont know how true it is but this seems typical of Michigan- people just dont care here.

Via USPS: 2,000,000 / 10,000 = 200 x $10.95 = $2190.00 + a shitload of tape.

Please feel free to correct my math.

You got it backwards. He wants 88k for 20kFV.

So, will he take 8.8MM pennies?

All I'm saying is he is trying to sell me $20,000 for $88,000, doesn't sound like a good deal to me. Thats why the "will he trade 2 million pennies for it", cause thats all its worth.

Sorry for the confusion, sometimes my sense of humor just ain't right

Looks like this hoard didn't get sold, it's even bigger: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dl ... 0540785085 1000 bags of unsearched wheat pennies 5000 in each bag

I only saw one wheat, a 1958 D, near the bottom of the first barrel. They'll make a great holiday gift anyway. I'll make sure my truck is out of the driveway when they're delivered.

Seriously, though, this is one of the most absurd offerings I've seen on eBay. Impressive pix, but improbable. I'd think the weight of the coppers in each of the barrels would cause the sides to bulge more than they are. Easy enough to create a false bottom in the barrels that only permits 12" of cents to be dumped in to give the illusion of being full to the brim.

So, do you think the listing was deceitful? I'm just curious as that never crossed my mind. Check out the post above yours...now that's absurd!!! In that listing the seller reveals the reserve and then goes on to say that he has a million more wheats.
