Well i walked in the door tonight with a plastic coffee can full of pennies to sort. I sat it on the banister as I walked back to the porch to grab a few things. I heard a terrible crash inside as both of my dogs came running. Lets say I had a few pennies on my floor tonight. Must be something with us sorters but I felt like i had to find every single one. I was even finding them in the other room underneath stuff, they roll and slide pretty nice on the hardwood.

Sometimes I loose an 82 zinc doing the "flick test." If it's copper, I'll find it, but if it's zinc I'm a little less persistent ;)

Pardon my ignorance but what perchance is this "flick test" you speak of?

I know of the flick test.. but I don't use it.. I have machines for that.

My floor looks like that penny floor.. they just aren't glued down.

Handsorters only.

Flick up an 82 and you can tell if it's copper by the sound it makes when it lands.

I prefer weight as more accurate. I usually flick before I weigh to see if my ears are still good.

@GG: Thogey pretty much explained it, you don't even have to let it land, I just catch it. Copper "sings" in the air where as zinc just kinda thuds. Flip a known copper and a known zinc a few times and you will quickly hear what I am saying.

I can also usually tell the copper by weighing a known zinc in one hand and the unknown in the other hand.
